About Genital Herpes

Transmission Genital herpes can be transmitted sexually, or through physical contact with areas where lesions are present. It generally occurs in the genital or anal area but can occur in other body parts as well. It enters through the openings of our body, but it generally prefers the warm mucous-lined membranes of the genitals. The herpes virus can be shed from the body even when lesions are not present

Life Cycle The outbreaks of lesions, ie. sores, blisters etc. generally occur annually. Once the herpes virus enters the skin it migrates to the central nervous system and thus escapes the immune system. There the virus enters a latent phase by forming an episome (genetic particle/genetic information) in the nucleus of the host cell which is later activated by stress, UV light, hormones or injury. When induced, the virus moves down the nerve cells to again cause skin lesions.

Interesting Information About one-fifth of all people age 12 and over in the United States are infected with HSV-2, but as many as 90% of them don't know it. More women than men are infected - one in four women compared to one in five men. The more sex partners the person has, the more common it is. The HSV2 and HSV1 are very similar when viewed under a microscope, however, the difference between them are their sites of preference: oral versus genital. However, if HSV2 enters the body above the waistline and stays there, it is still HSV2. The same holds true for HSV1 that enters the body at the genitals. The virus does not mutate based on where it ends up in the body. If it entered at the genitals, it will stay there, and any recurrences it causes will occur in the genital area.
