Acupuncture has an amazing long history that has made it the worlds oldest contemporary medical system. "More people have been treated by acupuncture than by all other systems of medicine combined." In March of 1996, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reclassified acupuncture needles from Class III (investigational) to Class II medical devices for use by licensed, registered or certified practitioners. In 1997, California enacted Senate Bill 212 (Chapter 98, Statutes of 1997, effective January 1, 1998), permanently including licensed acupuncturists as "physicians" in the state workers' compensation system for the treatment of injured workers. This helps ensure patients have the freedom to choose treatment from a healthcare provider that is most appropriate to their needs. In November 1997, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus panel found clear evidence that acupuncture is effective for postoperative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, nausea of pregnancy, and postoperative dental pain, and that it may be useful as an adjunct treatment for other pain conditions. Research supports acupuncture as an effective treatment for a number of conditions, and it has become a valued part of healthcare. Many nations support active research programs in the physiology and therapy of acupuncture. These countries are Russia, North and South Korea and Japan. Acupuncture is used in countries across both the Western and Eastern hemispheres and is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed practitioner.
