ULCERATIVE COLITIS:
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and ulceration to the inner lining of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. They are a chronic disease, also known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that have similar symptoms as Crohn’s disease but only occur in the colon. Due to abnormal responses by the body’s immune system, it produces irritation to the inner lining of the colon, causing prolonged lasting inflammation that ultimately leads to ulceration. Ulcerative colitis does not occur suddenly in an individual; the symptoms are developed over time and causes individuals to have flare-ups intermittently. A continuous inflammation of the lining of the colon may increase the chances of developing colon cancer.
ULCERATIVE COLITIS SYMPTOMS
The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. Typically, the body’s immune system would fight off any infection the body encounters. However, UC patient’s white blood cells (WBC) that naturally defend the body from any foreign pathogens would mistakenly think food, good intestinal bacteria, and the cells lining of the colon as invader and would send a response to phagocyte (engulf and destroy) bacteria and other foreign materials resulting in chronic inflammation and ulcerations inside the surface of the colon. Symptoms of UC include bloody diarrhea, rectal bleeding, an urgency to defecate and inability to defecate, abdominal and rectal pain, fever, fatigue, anemia, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
Risk Factors are:
Individuals with an overactive intestinal immune system
Inherit gene with ulcerative colitis
Ulcerative colitis generally occurs in both sex between the ages of 15-30 and 60+
Higher risk for Caucasian than any other race
TREATMENT OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS
There is no cure for ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is treated with multiple drugs or surgery. Doctors would prescribe UC patients with an anti-inflammatory drug to reduce the inflammation, immune system suppressor to suppresses the WBC response to prevent inflammation, and other drugs such as antibiotics, anti-diarrheal medication, pain reliever, and iron supplements to aid in the symptoms UC has caused in the colon. However, not all drugs will work for every individual, and depending on the severity, surgery is required. There are multiple ways surgery can be performed for patients with UC. Surgery can consist of removing part or the entire colon (large intestine and rectum) and reconstruction the small intestine forming a J-pouch to collect stools that are attached to the anus or create an opening in the abdominal for stool to be released.
ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT ULCERATIVE COLITIS
Acupuncture and herbal medicine induce homeostatic response on the cellular level by influencing the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities. They stimulate the central nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. Acupuncture helps ulcerative colitis by reversing tissue damage and reduces inflammation and improves their quality of life. Acupuncture is safe and painless. There are no drugs or hazardous equipment used, and no surgical operation performed.
CASE STUDIES:
According to the Healthcare Medicine Institute, a study has shown that acupuncture helps to eliminate ulcerative colitis. An experiment was conducted on ulcerative colitis patients that were randomly divided into two groups. Results show that group A patients that did a combination of acupuncture combined with herbal medicine and drugs had a total effective rate of 93.1% with 56 days of required care compared to group B patients who only received drugs had an overall effective rate of 75.86% with 81 days of care needed.

In April 2008 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I was shocked and concerned due to my father having the same health issue. I had a very abnormal digestive process, bouts of diarrhea and lack of energy. I also felt bloated and weak. My food selection was limited. Different foods that I would eat would have an adverse affect on my digestive system. I always made sure I was close to a restroom. My condition was constantly on my mind and I wondered what the future held for me. Over all it was an unknown type of illness that would affect me down the road. I thought I would never have a normal life.
My MD prescribed two different types of medications Entocort and Mercaptopurine. The treatments offered to me were medications and doctor visits. I also had a Colonoscopy (upper and lower GI) and a CAT scan. While taking these medications I had side effects of weakness and joint pain. It maintained my symptoms more than reversed the disease. The medications stabilized my symptoms and I had an occasional flare up – even though I was taking my medications.

Two and half years ago I had a foot injury. Freckles the dog stepped on my right foot. It was a contusion, later developing joint pain. From this first injury it appeared to move around my foot, to drop foot-(balance), then partial tear around ankle area. I went to two different physical therapist, still having very much inflammation and discomfort. My daughter seeing I was suffering with terrible pain (a 7 out of 10) suggested I try acupuncture.

After suffering for about three or four months, I began seeking to find some relief for my constant knee pain. When I talked to my medical doctor, she seemed to attribute my knee pain as the natural process of aging and perhaps arthritis. I began to feel discouraged because the things I enjoyed like walking my dog and going to gym classes seemed too difficult at best. I remember seeing a story about a horse being treated with acupuncture and thought, if it works for a horse, it could work for me as well. The next step was to find an acupuncturist. I wanted to ask a friend at church for a referral but I didn’t see her and didn’t have her phone number. Because I work full time it is difficult to travel a long distance for treatment. A few weeks passed and the pain persisted and had even gotten worse. I work in the Logo’s building across the street and was running an errand when I drove into the parking lot of the Ralph’s shopping center across the street. I must have passed the sign and the office of Dr Huang at least fifty times without noticing it. This particular day the sign seemed to pop out in front of my eyes as if it was magnified.
