I was told it was IBS. With a list of things to keep away from my diet I was sent home. I continued to experience problems and I would constantly be in the restroom. I finally returned to the Dr in 2003. I had a endoscopy and colonoscopy done; that's when I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis, which caused me to have severe diarrhea. I was given a steroid medication which it didn't help out at all. I would have 8-10 bowel movements a day. HOW IS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?
IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They cause frequent abdominal pains and irregular bowel movements that occur together. Irritable bowel syndrome can occur without any indication of visible damage or disease in the GI tract. They change the way the muscles contracts in the intestinal tract that result in diarrhea, constipation or both.
IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME SYMPTOMS
Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms are abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation.
Risk Factors are:
People under the age of 50
More common for women to have IBS
Higher chance if another family member has IBS

TREATMENT OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
Treatments for irritable bowel syndrome focuses on relieving the signs and symptoms. Treatment depends on the pattern of changes in their bowel movements. An individual with mild signs and symptoms can control their symptoms by changing their diet and lifestyle. If the condition is moderate or severe, medication and counseling are recommended to relieve the symptoms. Medication is treated for diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. However, some medicines work only for certain types of IBS and can make other types worse.
ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
Acupuncture and herbal medicine induce homeostatic response on the cellular level by influencing the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities. They stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. Acupuncture helps irritable bowel syndrome by strengthening the internal organs, restoring the gastrointestinal tract muscle contractions, and improves their quality of life. Acupuncture is safe and painless. There are no drugs or hazardous equipment used and no surgical operation.
CASE STUDIES:
A study was done at Yiwu Central Hospital on 86 patients with IBD-D that was randomly divided into a control group and an observation group. The control group received herbal medicine three times a day over 30 days, and the observation group received herbal medicine (same as the control group) and acupuncture five times a week over 30 days. Results showed herbal medicine and acupuncture combined recovery rate was 34.9% with a total effective rate of 90.7% compared to recover rate of 18.6% and an overall effective rate of 79.1% for the control group.

My Journey started 25 years ago, when I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of connective tissue arthritis. Shortly after this I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This was followed by endometriosis, IBS, upper G.I inflammation, eyeritis, and ending with the most terrible condition called IC or interstitial cystitis; a very painful chronic bladder condition. All these conditions are a problem of the autoimmune system.
Over these 25 years, all of the other issues, with the help of doctors, medications, nutritionists and self-research, I was able to treat the conditions. But it was like putting band-aids on huge wounds. However, NOTHING helped the IC. I went to a urologist for several years. He used a treatment called DMSO, which is a bladder catheterization with a solution designed to coat the bladder in an attempt to temporarily replace the mucus lining naturally found in the bladder. (It is assumed that IC patients lack this lining.) I did these treatments in his office, once or more a month for several years. The treatments were frequently painful and always uncomfortable. They were better than nothing, but they barely got me through from treatment to treatment.
After a couple of years of this, I started realizing that my hair was falling out. The last six treatments had caused nausea, and one morning I woke up with a sense that I was slowly dying. I went in for the next treatment and this one hurt so bad. When I sat up on the exam table, after the installation of DMSO, pain shot through my bladder and down my legs, I thought I was going to lose the solution, which I had to hold for 20 minutes, I realized then, I had to do something else. DMSO was not working for me.
