HOW IS CROHN’S DISEASE TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?
Crohn’s disease is a chronic and irremediable disease that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are an autoimmune disease-causing enduring inflammation and irritation to the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s inflammation commonly occurs at the end of the ileum (small intestine) and at the cecum (the beginning of large intestine) where they connect. However, Crohn’s disease conditions vary by person and inflammation can affect an individual in one section or segments throughout the GI tract (from the oral cavity to anus). Inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease can spread deep into the layers of the bowel tissue resulting in thickening of the bowel wall that does not subside. Subsequently, inflammation from Crohn’s disease can develop into colorectal cancer.
CROHN’S DISEASE SYMPTOMS
The cause of Crohn’s disease is not known. Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease, which the immune system is unable to differentiate between their cells from foreign pathogens. The body’s natural defense system would mistakenly believe these harmless bacteria in their intestinal are foreign pathogens. By protecting its own body from pathogens (virus, bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms), the immune system produces a response and attack the harmless bacteria that aid in digestion. Subsequently, inflammation and irritation in the GI tract cause individuals to experience intestinal obstructions, rectal bleeding, fatigue, loss of appetite, mouth ulcer, slow growth and many other disturbances with the GI system. Crohn’s disease can also cause inflammation on the skin, eyes, joints, and in the liver or bile ducts.
RISK FACTORS ARE:
Crohn’s disease is believed to be hereditary. That being the case, a significant chance an individual will have Crohn’s disease is if someone in their family or a close relative have Crohn’s disease.
An individual has a higher risk of developing Crohn’s disease when both mother and father have IBD.
Crohn’s disease affects both men and women between the ages of 15 and 35.
Caucasian and Eastern Europe Jewish lineage have a higher risk of developing Crohn’s disease than African American, American Indian, Asians, or Hispanics.
Active smokers are twofold likely to develop Crohn’s disease than non-smokers.
MODERN MEDICINE TREATMENT OF CROHN’S DISEASE | DRUG MEDICINE
There is no cure for Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease can be treated with specific medication based on the severity and location of the condition. Medication such as steroids and immunosuppressants, aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, and immunomodulators can be prescribed to help control, sustain flair-ups and reduce inflammation. However, each medication has various side effects such as headaches, heartburn, acne, bone loss, high blood pressure, low white blood cell count and other side effects that can potentially lead to higher chance of developing infections and pancreatitis. Additionally, some medication can take several weeks or months before becoming active and require regular screening due to high risk of colorectal cancer. Since Crohn’s condition occasionally going into remission, it is unknown if a specific prescription drug is effective towards Crohn’s disease.
Surgery may be required if all medication drugs have been exhausted and ineffective towards the individual. Depending on the location of the condition, the operation consists of removing that specific part of inflammation from the intestines. However, each part of the internal organs plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis within our body. By removing an essential part of the organ, Crohn’s disease can reappear but in other areas of the intestines that can lead to diarrhea or malnutrition.

In April 2008 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I was shocked and concerned due to my father having the same health issue. My Journey started 25 years ago, when I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of connective tissue arthritis. Shortly after this I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This was followed by endometriosis, IBS, upper G.I inflammation, eyeritis, and ending with the most terrible condition called IC or interstitial cystitis; a very painful chronic bladder condition. All these conditions are a problem of the autoimmune system.
Over these 25 years, all of the other issues, with the help of doctors, medications, nutritionists and self-research, I was able to treat the conditions. But it was like putting band-aids on huge wounds. However, NOTHING helped the IC. I went to a urologist for several years. He used a treatment called DMSO, which is a bladder catheterization with a solution designed to coat the bladder in an attempt to temporarily replace the mucus lining naturally found in the bladder. (It is assumed that IC patients lack this lining.) I did these treatments in his office, once or more a month for several years. The treatments were frequently painful and always uncomfortable. They were better than nothing, but they barely got me through from treatment to treatment.
After a couple of years of this, I started realizing that my hair was falling out. The last six treatments had caused nausea, and one morning I woke up with a sense that I was slowly dying. I went in for the next treatment and this one hurt so bad. When I sat up on the exam table, after the installation of DMSO, pain shot through my bladder and down my legs, I thought I was going to lose the solution, which I had to hold for 20 minutes, I realized then, I had to do something else. DMSO was not working for me.

Five years ago I woke up in the morning and I can't walk due to swelling and stiffness on the knee. My primary doctor referred me to a specialist. Acupuncture definitely helped me and I haven't taken any drug medications in 2 years. My blood work is stable, and my SED RATE (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate or ESR) went from 95 to 2. My SED RATE has not been that low in 10-12 years and I was surprised to hear the rheumatologist say that I am stable.

I was first diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis about 13 years ago, and then was diagnosed with Lymphoma beginning of 2016. I became very stressed out when I learned of my condition. My ankles, knees, wrists, and elbows were badly affected. I was a teacher and needed accommodations to transit when I was in school, such as needing rollers on my stools so I didn't have to stand whenever I was helping my students. I first noticed unusual pain as the first symptom. I would still exercise, but I could not do yoga, pilates, spin classes, or any fitness classes that involved bending of my joints because it would put too much pressure on my joints.
My dad had Psoriasis and suffered severely; 95% of his skin was covered with psoriasis and there was no cure to it. He tried taking medicines and treatments but did not get better. I wish I could have prevented it early. I took different kinds of medications such as Enbrel for Psoriatic Arthritis that was prescribed by my rheumatologist. It is a weekly injection, and I took it for 12 years. The side effect of this drug was Lymphoma (a type of cancer). I had surgery in my neck and they found a small lymph that looked suspicious. It was at that time that I stopped taking Enbrel. I was also taking Methotrexate, and it raised my liver count. Methotrexate is a form of low dose chemotherapy, an immunosuppressive agent, that is very toxic for the liver. I still see my rheumatologist every 3 months plus getting blood work done. I thought the medications were working, they are very costly. I would spend about $1700 a month on the Enbrel shots. If I had to do it over again, I would do a more natural approach. The medications that I was taking weakened my immune system, and drug side effects was the reason for me getting diagnosed with lymphoma.
I became more aware and knowledgeable about natural treatments, did some research and on February 9th, 2016, I started coming to Agape Acupuncture to get acupuncture treatments and herbal medicine. Since I started getting treatments here, I have felt better. Dr. Huang has always been very positive, and he is very kind, energetic, and reassuring. Acupuncture definitely helped me and I haven't taken any drug medications in 2 years. My blood work is stable, and my SED RATE (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate or ESR) went from 95 to 2. The ESR is a blood test that reveals inflammatory activity in the body and helps in the diagnosis and monitors the process of an inflammatory disease. My SED RATE has not been that low in 10-12 years and I was surprised to hear the rheumatologist say that I am stable.
I will continue to come to Agape Acupuncture for treatments. My friends and family are very happy and pleased that I'm not taking drug medicines anymore. My impression of Agape Acupuncture remains the same, it is always very inviting and I have recommended some friends as I was actually referred to this clinic by a friend of mine. I believe that anything that's less invasive and has no side effects has to be a safer way to approach and prevent illness. I would tell anyone that's skeptical to just try acupuncture before spending money on drug medications. Go on the internet to see the testimonials; I am the living proof that acupuncture works! At least give it a shot.
