HOW IS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (R.A.) TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS:

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disease (the immune system creates it’s on antibodies in the blood and mistakes parts of the body as a pathogen and attacks its own cells) that is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints; particularly the synovial joints. While the inflammation of the tissue surrounds the joints, the disease can cause injury and inflammation to other organs in the body. A joint is the point of connection where two bones meet and in between that joint is cartilage and soft tissue. Rheumatoid Arthritis can also destroy the cartilage in between the bones. Chronic inflammation can lead to destroy of the cartilage, bones, and ligaments in the surrounding tissues; causing the bones to be deformed. Because this disease attacks other organs it is also considered a systemic disease or rheumatoid disease. Some characteristics of Rheumatoid Arthritis are swelling, pain, stiffness, redness in the joints and fatigue, which can be mild or severe. However, the degree of the inflammation, pain and swelling does not directly affect the destroying of the bones. Persistent stiffness in the morning that digresses as the day goes on is an early sign of Rheumatoid Arthritis. This pain can last up to an hour or a few hours. Rheumatoid Arthritis pain can also be felt after sitting for long periods of time.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

There is no known cause for Rheumatoid Arthritis. In theory there are some risk factors. There is an increase in occurrence of Rheumatoid Arthritis in women whom have never been pregnant and in women that have given birth. Rheumatoid Arthritis is more common in women than in men. Statistics show that 70% more or women have Rheumatoid Arthritis than in men. There is genetic link to Rheumatoid Arthritis that can run in families. An individual with “specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes are at a greater risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. Other factors include cigarette smoking and increasing age.

TREATMENT:

Research studies show there isn’t a known cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis. A few goals of treatment are to reduce inflammation and manage pain, maximize joint function. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate test also called ESR measures the speed of red blood cells as they fall to the bottom of the glass testing tube. When abnormal proteins are present in the blood due to inflammation, red blood cells clump together and sink more quickly. This blood test is useful in detecting inflammation in the body that may be caused by some cancers, infections and auto-immunes diseases. X-rays are also taken to determine the joints that are affected by inflammation and to see if there had been damage to the bones. Drugs used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis are corticosteroids such as Prednisone to reduce joint inflammation and pain. Plaquenil (hydroychloroquine) is also a common drug among many to promote remission of the disease by preventing progressive joint destruction. Depending upon severity of the disease, surgery is needed to maximize joint mobility.

Resent study listed on website HealthDay Source: Arthritis & Rheumatism, news release, Nov. 28, 2012 states, “"Joint arthroplasty is successful in relieving the pain and disability caused by hip or knee arthritis," study author Dr. Bheeshma Ravi, from the University of Toronto and Women's College Research Institute, said in a journal news release. "While complication rates are low, there are some cases with serious consequences that include infection, joint dislocation, blood clots and even death."

ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (R.A.):

Acupuncture has been established and utilized for over 4000 years and is a safe and effective method of treatment for patients debilitated by Rheumatoid Arthritis. Acupuncture encourages the body to promote natural healing, improve functioning, and promote and restore health. This is done by inserting very thin needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation when needed at precise acupuncture points.

Acupuncture is safe and has an efficacious approach for treating Rheumatoid Arthritis. A desirable benefit of using acupuncture to treat RA is that it is drug-free and has the same effect to minimize pain. Treatment regimens that include prescription drugs can cause a tolerance and increased doses are needed to have an effect (depending on the individual). There are no side-effects and risk for worsening of the disease as a result of acupuncture. Acupuncture treatments are performed by licensed and experienced acupuncturist. Research study on use of drug Tofacitinib shows that various dosages of this drug were given as a trial to multiple patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Six of the patients who were receiving Tofacitinib experience common adverse reactions of headache and upper respiratory tract infection.

My Journey started 25 years ago, when I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of connective tissue arthritis. Shortly after this I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This was followed by endometriosis, IBS, upper G.I inflammation, eyeritis, and ending with the most terrible condition called IC or interstitial cystitis; a very painful chronic bladder condition. All these conditions are a problem of the autoimmune system.

Over these 25 years, all of the other issues, with the help of doctors, medications, nutritionists and self-research, I was able to treat the conditions. But it was like putting band-aids on huge wounds. However, NOTHING helped the IC. I went to a urologist for several years. He used a treatment called DMSO, which is a bladder catheterization with a solution designed to coat the bladder in an attempt to temporarily replace the mucus lining naturally found in the bladder. (It is assumed that IC patients lack this lining.) I did these treatments in his office, once or more a month for several years. The treatments were frequently painful and always uncomfortable. They were better than nothing, but they barely got me through from treatment to treatment.

After a couple of years of this, I started realizing that my hair was falling out. The last six treatments had caused nausea, and one morning I woke up with a sense that I was slowly dying. I went in for the next treatment and this one hurt so bad. When I sat up on the exam table, after the installation of DMSO, pain shot through my bladder and down my legs, I thought I was going to lose the solution, which I had to hold for 20 minutes, I realized then, I had to do something else. DMSO was not working for me.

Through a friend I learned about Dr. Huang and Agape Acupuncture; and the Lord started to change my life. With Dr. Kevin's guidance of acupuncture, herbs, diet change, regular sleep and exercise, I am now more than 95% better! This a miracle. Often times, Dr. Kevin knew more about IC than the urologist. For example, he told me to stop eating sugar. Only now are the urologists (some of them) suggesting IC patients stop eating sugar. Dr. Kevin was way ahead of the curve on that one!

It is so wonderful to be free of that terrible pain caused by the IC. And my low grade depression is gone too! As a bonus, I have more energy, strength and stamina than I have had in 25 years. The fibromyalgia has significantly decreased, the ache of the arthritis is much better; and I have been able to lower the dosage of a stomach medication. It feels so good to wake up earlier in the mornings and feel ready to tackle the day.

Five years ago I woke up in the morning and I can't walk due to swelling and stiffness on the knee. My primary doctor referred me to a specialist. Dr. Kevin told me immediately all my sickness are due to Autoimmune. It will take about 6 months to treat and I need to follow a strict diet, & don’t do anything that is stressful. I told him about my dream of going back to school and wanting to become an attorney. Dr. Kevin warned me law school is stressful and you will need tune ups if you are planning to go to law school. My 17-year-old daughter is an accomplished athlete who competes at a high level. At 16 she started having some health issues. Her blood tests showed that she had hyperthyroidism. Doctors wanted to put her on medication that would ultimately force her to be on medication for the rest of her life. We knew she was too young and otherwise healthy to do that, so we took her to a natural doctor who put her on vitamins to help her health improve.

About a year later, she lost a small patch of hair and we went back to the natural doctor to see what might have caused that. He took blood tests again and her thyroid was still hyper. Also her iron was low and he said she was anemic. She was often tired, but we thought it was from all the volleyball training. So she started taking iron to see if that would improve things. Strangely, her cholesterol was also high (over 200) even though she was practically a vegetarian. And her tonsils were always swollen.

After a few weeks on the iron, she came home from a volleyball tournament with swollen ankles. She thought she had double sprained ankles. Within a couple days, a dark red rash showed up on her ankles and spread up her legs to her knees. We took her to a dermatologist and he said it looked like an autoimmune response. At that point, she was also feeling really weak and she could barely walk with her swollen ankles. My husband researched her symptoms and we realized there was no known Western cure for what she was experiencing. There was only thyroid medication and steroids to reduce the symptoms, but nothing to actually heal her. So we looked up non-Western approaches to treating an autoimmune disorder, and we found Dr. Huang.

We went in scared and confused, watching our strong, healthy daughter in such a weak state. Dr. Huang seemed so confident that he could help her. He believed she had a virus (probably Epstein Bar) and her body had been fighting it since she first started not feeling well a year before. That was why her tonsils were always swollen. The virus finally took over and the autoimmune response was her immune system over-fighting until it actually attacked her own body.

In the beginning of treatment, her hands also started to swell and the rash looked like it was tying to come through on her arms, but acupuncture seemed to keep it from breaking out the way her legs did. She remained really weak the first couple weeks, but acupuncture did stabilize her. Every time we went in, we had so many questions for Dr. Huang, and he was always so patient and kind in answering us. He even took phone calls (so many calls!), and always understood our concerns.

Just over a month of acupuncture, taking herbs and eating the foods Dr. Huang suggested, her rash was fading and her ankles were normal. She took blood tests and her thyroid level was normal for the first time in a year! No medications were necessary. Her iron was also normal even after stopping iron supplements-just changes in diet and getting her system healthy with acupuncture and herbs. Her low white blood cell count showed that she was still fighting the virus, which was also apparent as her energy was still low, and so we continued treatment. She slowly got back into working out with volleyball, but had to take it easy. In two and a half months, she would be leaving to the university where she would play volleyball. I was afraid she would need more time to heal after all her body had been going through, but Dr. Huang believed he could get her healthy by then.

Her next blood test was another month later, and at that point her cholesterol was down to
147. It went down over 50 points even after Dr. Huang had her add organic beef to her diet to help her iron. I asked him how it could be over 200 when she was practically a vegetarian and yet drop so much when she started eating beef. Dr. Huang explained that acupuncture and herbs were helping her liver function properly, which is a greater factor in cholesterol than just diet. The fact that my daughter was feeling better told me acupuncture was working, but seeing the blood tests was proof that it was really healing her inside. The patch of hair she had lost also started growing back, and her tonsils were getting smaller than they'd been in a year.

She had a couple set backs along the way, but Dr. Huang was always there to help her through. She continued getting stronger and after almost four months of seeing Dr. Huang, she was well-just in time to go off to USC where she is playing volleyball. She is fully back to playing and feels as strong as she was before she got sick.

Watching my daughter go through this brought on stress like I'd never felt before. I couldn't eat. I lost 10 pounds and ended up getting an ulcer. My digestive system was a mess and that led to hemorrhoids that wouldn't heal. I knew that if Dr. Huang could heal what my daughter had just gone through, he could heal me. And he did with acupuncture and herbs, I also got better.

Dr. Huang is a wonderful healer, and he is also a genuinely good man. He always keeps such a positive, encouraging attitude. He is unlike any doctor I've been to before, and I think it's because he finds such joy in what he does. He loves to heal people and he truly honors God with his good work.
