Six years ago, I found myself battling HBP (High Blood Pressure) due to overwhelming stress. Then, to my devastation, shock, and horror, about three years ago, I received the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis—a progressive autoimmune disorder where my immune system attacks my central nervous system, causing lesions. I have been struggling with Systemic Sclerosis, also known as scleroderma, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), Anxiety, and Stress for about three years now. Systemic Sclerosis, an autoimmune disease, has particularly affected me as it causes the body to attack itself. In my case, inflammation of the esophagus, stomach pain, and constant heartburn.

HOW IS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (R.A.) AUTO IMMUNE CONDITION TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE, HERBS, NUTRITION

HOW IS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (R.A.) TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS:

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disease (the immune system creates it’s on antibodies in the blood and mistakes parts of the body as a pathogen and attacks its own cells) that is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints; particularly the synovial joints. While the inflammation of the tissue surrounds the joints, the disease can cause injury and inflammation to other organs in the body. A joint is the point of connection where two bones meet and in between that joint is cartilage and soft tissue. Rheumatoid Arthritis can also destroy the cartilage in between the bones. Chronic inflammation can lead to destroy of the cartilage, bones, and ligaments in the surrounding tissues; causing the bones to be deformed. Because this disease attacks other organs it is also considered a systemic disease or rheumatoid disease. Some characteristics of Rheumatoid Arthritis are swelling, pain, stiffness, redness in the joints and fatigue, which can be mild or severe. However, the degree of the inflammation, pain and swelling does not directly affect the destroying of the bones. Persistent stiffness in the morning that digresses as the day goes on is an early sign of Rheumatoid Arthritis. This pain can last up to an hour or a few hours. Rheumatoid Arthritis pain can also be felt after sitting for long periods of time.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

There is no known cause for Rheumatoid Arthritis. In theory there are some risk factors. There is an increase in occurrence of Rheumatoid Arthritis in women whom have never been pregnant and in women that have given birth. Rheumatoid Arthritis is more common in women than in men. Statistics show that 70% more or women have Rheumatoid Arthritis than in men. There is genetic link to Rheumatoid Arthritis that can run in families. An individual with “specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes are at a greater risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. Other factors include cigarette smoking and increasing age.

TREATMENT:

Research studies show there isn’t a known cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis. A few goals of treatment are to reduce inflammation and manage pain, maximize joint function. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate test also called ESR measures the speed of red blood cells as they fall to the bottom of the glass testing tube. When abnormal proteins are present in the blood due to inflammation, red blood cells clump together and sink more quickly. This blood test is useful in detecting inflammation in the body that may be caused by some cancers, infections and auto-immunes diseases. X-rays are also taken to determine the joints that are affected by inflammation and to see if there had been damage to the bones. Drugs used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis are corticosteroids such as Prednisone to reduce joint inflammation and pain. Plaquenil (hydroychloroquine) is also a common drug among many to promote remission of the disease by preventing progressive joint destruction. Depending upon severity of the disease, surgery is needed to maximize joint mobility.

Resent study listed on website HealthDay Source: Arthritis & Rheumatism, news release, Nov. 28, 2012 states, “"Joint arthroplasty is successful in relieving the pain and disability caused by hip or knee arthritis," study author Dr. Bheeshma Ravi, from the University of Toronto and Women's College Research Institute, said in a journal news release. "While complication rates are low, there are some cases with serious consequences that include infection, joint dislocation, blood clots and even death."

ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (R.A.):

Acupuncture has been established and utilized for over 4000 years and is a safe and effective method of treatment for patients debilitated by Rheumatoid Arthritis. Acupuncture encourages the body to promote natural healing, improve functioning, and promote and restore health. This is done by inserting very thin needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation when needed at precise acupuncture points.

Acupuncture is safe and has an efficacious approach for treating Rheumatoid Arthritis. A desirable benefit of using acupuncture to treat RA is that it is drug-free and has the same effect to minimize pain. Treatment regimens that include prescription drugs can cause a tolerance and increased doses are needed to have an effect (depending on the individual). Research study on use of drug Tofacitinib shows that various dosages of this drug were given as a trial to multiple patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Six of the patients who were receiving Tofacitinib experience common adverse reactions of headache and upper respiratory tract infection.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate how the body uses its energy. When the thyroid gland is damaged, inflammation from Hashimoto's decreases the hormone production and slows down the body function. Inflammation from Hashimoto's often lead to hypothyroidism when left untreated. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a slowly progressing disease. They may experience a painless fullness feeling in the throat, tiredness, weight gain, joint and muscle pain, constipation, dry and thinning of hair, depression, and a reduced heart rate.

Eight times more common in women than men

Can occur at any ages but appears more often between ages 40 and 60

Higher chance if another family member has Hashimoto's thyroiditis

More likely to develop if an individual has another autoimmune disease

MODERN MEDICINE TREATMENT OF HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS | DRUG MEDICINE

Treatment for Hashimoto's thyroiditis depends on the condition of the thyroid gland. If the thyroid does not show signs of hormone deficiency or have sufficient damage to trigger hypothyroidism, then the individual thyroid would be monitored for changes. However, if Hashimoto's disease has caused hormones deficiency, an individual may need synthetic thyroid hormone medication. Once an individual goes on thyroid hormones medication, they will be on it every day for the rest of their life. When a dosage is skipped or stopped, signs and symptom will slowly return.

My 17-year-old daughter is an accomplished athlete who competes at a high level. At 16 she started having some health issues. Her blood tests showed that she had hyperthyroidism. Doctors wanted to put her on medication that would ultimately force her to be on medication for the rest of her life. We knew she was too young and otherwise healthy to do that, so we took her to a natural doctor who put her on vitamins to help her health improve.

About a year later, she lost a small patch of hair and we went back to the natural doctor to see what might have caused that. He took blood tests again and her thyroid was still hyper. Also her iron was low and he said she was anemic. She was often tired, but we thought it was from all the volleyball training. So she started taking iron to see if that would improve things. Strangely, her cholesterol was also high (over 200) even though she was practically a vegetarian. And her tonsils were always swollen.

After a few weeks on the iron, she came home from a volleyball tournament with swollen ankles. She thought she had double sprained ankles. Within a couple days, a dark red rash showed up on her ankles and spread up her legs to her knees. We took her to a dermatologist and he said it looked like an autoimmune response. At that point, she was also feeling really weak and she could barely walk with her swollen ankles. My husband researched her symptoms and we realized there was no known Western cure for what she was experiencing. There was only thyroid medication and steroids to reduce the symptoms, but nothing to actually heal her. So we looked up non-Western approaches to treating an autoimmune disorder, and we found Dr. Huang.

We went in scared and confused, watching our strong, healthy daughter in such a weak state. Dr. Huang seemed so confident that he could help her. He believed she had a virus (probably Epstein Bar) and her body had been fighting it since she first started not feeling well a year before. That was why her tonsils were always swollen. The virus finally took over and the autoimmune response was her immune system over-fighting until it actually attacked her own body.

In the beginning of treatment, her hands also started to swell and the rash looked like it was tying to come through on her arms, but acupuncture seemed to keep it from breaking out the way her legs did. She remained really weak the first couple weeks, but acupuncture did stabilize her. Every time we went in, we had so many questions for Dr. Huang, and he was always so patient and kind in answering us. He even took phone calls (so many calls!), and always understood our concerns.

Just over a month of acupuncture, taking herbs and eating the foods Dr. Huang suggested, her rash was fading and her ankles were normal. She took blood tests and her thyroid level was normal for the first time in a year! No medications were necessary. Her iron was also normal even after stopping iron supplements-just changes in diet and getting her system healthy with acupuncture and herbs. Her low white blood cell count showed that she was still fighting the virus, which was also apparent as her energy was still low, and so we continued treatment. She slowly got back into working out with volleyball, but had to take it easy. In two and a half months, she would be leaving to the university where she would play volleyball. I was afraid she would need more time to heal after all her body had been going through, but Dr. Huang believed he could get her healthy by then.

Her next blood test was another month later, and at that point her cholesterol was down to
147. It went down over 50 points even after Dr. Huang had her add organic beef to her diet to help her iron. I asked him how it could be over 200 when she was practically a vegetarian and yet drop so much when she started eating beef. Dr. Huang explained that acupuncture and herbs were helping her liver function properly, which is a greater factor in cholesterol than just diet. The fact that my daughter was feeling better told me acupuncture was working, but seeing the blood tests was proof that it was really healing her inside. The patch of hair she had lost also started growing back, and her tonsils were getting smaller than they'd been in a year.

She had a couple set backs along the way, but Dr. Huang was always there to help her through. She continued getting stronger and after almost four months of seeing Dr. Huang, she was well-just in time to go off to USC where she is playing volleyball. She is fully back to playing and feels as strong as she was before she got sick.

Watching my daughter go through this brought on stress like I'd never felt before. I couldn't eat. I lost 10 pounds and ended up getting an ulcer. My Name is Austin. I am 19 years old and I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2006 when I was 12 years old. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is an Auto-Immune Disease that attacks the colon and causes severe diarrhea and bleeding.

My Mom and Dad took me to many specialist doctors and all of them said that there is no cure for UC and they all wanted get me on Drugs! One doctor even recommended to have my colon removed. Yes – at 12 years old.

After my colonoscopy and diagnosis I ended up on medical steroids.  The side effects of steroids are horrible (Major Face Swelling, acne, weight gain, etc..) We were not satisfied with what the doctors were saying and doing. We prayed and asked God to help us find a treatment. We found Dr. Kevin Huang and The Natural Medicine Center: Praise God for them!

My Dad saw an article in the paper for Natural Medicine and made an appointment for me to see Dr. Huang. PSORIASIS SYMPTOMS

Plaque Psoriasis is a widespread type of psoriasis. It characterized by thick plaque, patchy, red rashes. The rashes are oval to circular in shape; with white, silvery scales. Psoriasis often shows up on the lower back, elbows, scalp and knees. This chronic inflammatory skin condition is not contagious. aq Various types of Psoriasis are (eg, Psoriasis, Nails; Guttate Psoriasis; Psoriatric Arthritis; Psoriasis, Pustular. Psoriasis is more prevalent in adults than in children.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Instead of fighting off invading pathogens, the immune system causes an inflammatory response and hyper proliferation of the skin cells occurs. The “T-cells” (white blood cells) become hyperactive attacking the skin; this causes the skin cells to multiply rapidly and they begin to form on the epidermis (surface layer of skin). Healthy skin cells develop, mature and every 30 days slough off. With plaque psoriasis, this process is 3-6 days; which causes the thick plaque formation of the skin cells. T-cells also form chemicals that heal the skin. These cells produce an unusual amount of the chemicals and result in more inflammation in the skin and joints. Psoriasis can appear like other skin conditions and this makes diagnosis of the disease difficult. A skin sample is taken and examined under a microscope.

TREATMENT USING MODERN MEDICINE

Management of psoriasis includes topical corticosteroids which aid as anti-inflammatory agents. These drugs suppress the immune system to slow down the growth of skin cells. Here are a few drugs used to treat Plaque Psoriasis;  Anthralin, Vitamin D analogues, topical retinoids, calcineurin inhibitors.  Methotrexate (also used to slow down cells that are rapidly growing in the body such as cancer cells, bone marrow cells and skin cells) is one of the oral drugs used in treating Plaque Psoriasis. Some side effects of this drug are nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, dizziness, tired feeling, headaches, bleeding gums and blurred vision.  Although these drugs aid in the production of normal skin proliferation and are prescribed in various doses there are some side effects such as – photosensitivity (topical agents). UVB Therapy and Psoralen (oral) is a form of light therapy and oral drug to increase sensitivity to UVB light. This form of therapy is used to kill T-cells, which are the white cells invading the affected are of the skin causing inflammation. Precaution must be taken to ensure there is no sun burn in the areas the medication is applied.  

ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT PSORIASIS

Acupuncture causes the anti-inflammatory mechanisms to release and it reduces the redness associated with psoriasis. Acupuncture also reduces stress and anxiety which are triggers of psoriasis. Acupuncture is also safe because disposable sterile needles are used in the treatment of acupuncture. Also, there are no harmful or discomforting side effects such as those listed above for the treatment of psoriasis. There are also topical herbal creams and herbal supplement that can be used in the treatment of psoriasis and all are prescribed by a licensed acupuncturist. All herbs should be taken under the care of a Licensed Acupuncture to ensure maximum results and compliance. Natural medicine is used to treat the root of the disease and not the symptomatic manifestations of the underlying cause.

CASE STUDIES

The direction of treatment is to try and contain or deactivate T-cells that are causing the hyper proliferation in the skin.  What triggers the activation of T-cells is not well understood.  UVB light therapy and Psoralen (PUVB) is becoming a popular form of treatment for psoriasis. Just as there are side effects to oral drugs to manage Psoriasis studies show there is a risk for squamous cell cancer (SCC) and basal cell cancer (BCC).

“Exposure to more than 350 PUVA treatments greatly increases the risk of SCC,” the authors write. “The risks of SCC in long-term PUVA-treated patients should be considered in determining the risk of this therapy relative to other treatments for severe psoriasis.” – RobertS. Stern, MD

In April 2008 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I was shocked and concerned due to my father having the same health issue. I had a very abnormal digestive process, bouts of diarrhea and lack of energy. I also felt bloated and weak. My food selection was limited. In January 2011, I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis. Up until then, I was healthy. Then in April 2012, I was diagnosed with Lupus which was detected in my blood. The diagnosis left me shocked and fearful. I was 36 and thought that I was too young for this. I had severe pain from my illness. I sought the help of a general doctor and 2 Rheumatologists. The Rheumatologist put me on Plaquenil twice a day, which did not help me at all and made my psoriasis worse. I was also on a Lupus drug trial which made things worse. My energy was low, my immune system was down. I missed a lot of work, had to reduce hours, and my job was losing faith in me. At home I had no energy to clean and I couldn’t do as much around the house. I’m a single mother so everything was on me. I did not socialize because I was always tired. When you stop socializing, friends stop calling you. I was so discouraged and I was losing hope.

A friend at church gave me the phone number to Natural Medicine Center and my mom suggested I try acupuncture. My friends and family were very supportive. I was skeptical, negative and doubtful that it would work but decided to put everything into it. When I first started, I was impressed.
