HOW IS CROHN’S DISEASE TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

Crohn’s disease is a chronic and irremediable disease that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are an autoimmune disease-causing enduring inflammation and irritation to the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s inflammation commonly occurs at the end of the ileum (small intestine) and at the cecum (the beginning of large intestine) where they connect. However, Crohn’s disease conditions vary by person and inflammation can affect an individual in one section or segments throughout the GI tract (from the oral cavity to anus). Inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease can spread deep into the layers of the bowel tissue resulting in thickening of the bowel wall that does not subside. Subsequently, inflammation from Crohn’s disease can develop into colorectal cancer. 

CROHN’S DISEASE SYMPTOMS

The cause of Crohn’s disease is not known. Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease, which the immune system is unable to differentiate between their cells from foreign pathogens. The body’s natural defense system would mistakenly believe these harmless bacteria in their intestinal are foreign pathogens. By protecting its own body from pathogens (virus, bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms), the immune system produces a response and attack the harmless bacteria that aid in digestion. Subsequently, inflammation and irritation in the GI tract cause individuals to experience intestinal obstructions, rectal bleeding, fatigue, loss of appetite, mouth ulcer, slow growth and many other disturbances with the GI system. Crohn’s disease can also cause inflammation on the skin, eyes, joints, and in the liver or bile ducts.

RISK FACTORS ARE:

Crohn’s disease is believed to be hereditary. That being the case, a significant chance an individual will have Crohn’s disease is if someone in their family or a close relative have Crohn’s disease.

An individual has a higher risk of developing Crohn’s disease when both mother and father have IBD.

Crohn’s disease affects both men and women between the ages of 15 and 35.

Caucasian and Eastern Europe Jewish lineage have a higher risk of developing Crohn’s disease than African American, American Indian, Asians, or Hispanics.

Active smokers are twofold likely to develop Crohn’s disease than non-smokers.

MODERN MEDICINE TREATMENT OF CROHN’S DISEASE | DRUG MEDICINE

There is no cure for Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease can be treated with specific medication based on the severity and location of the condition. Medication such as steroids and immunosuppressants, aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, and immunomodulators can be prescribed to help control, sustain flair-ups and reduce inflammation. However, each medication has various side effects such as headaches, heartburn, acne, bone loss, high blood pressure, low white blood cell count and other side effects that can potentially lead to higher chance of developing infections and pancreatitis. Additionally, some medication can take several weeks or months before becoming active and require regular screening due to high risk of colorectal cancer. Since Crohn’s condition occasionally going into remission, it is unknown if a specific prescription drug is effective towards Crohn’s disease.

Surgery may be required if all medication drugs have been exhausted and ineffective towards the individual. Depending on the location of the condition, the operation consists of removing that specific part of inflammation from the intestines. However, each part of the internal organs plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis within our body. By removing an essential part of the organ, Crohn’s disease can reappear but in other areas of the intestines that can lead to diarrhea or malnutrition.

ACUPUNCTURE AND HERBAL MEDICINE TO BENEFIT CROHN’S DISEASE

ULCERATIVE COLITIS:
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and ulceration to the inner lining of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. They are a chronic disease, also known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that have similar symptoms as Crohn’s disease but only occur in the colon. Due to abnormal responses by the body’s immune system, it produces irritation to the inner lining of the colon, causing prolonged lasting inflammation that ultimately leads to ulceration. Ulcerative colitis does not occur suddenly in an individual; the symptoms are developed over time and causes individuals to have flare-ups intermittently. A continuous inflammation of the lining of the colon may increase the chances of developing colon cancer.

ULCERATIVE COLITIS SYMPTOMS
The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. Typically, the body’s immune system would fight off any infection the body encounters. However, UC patient’s white blood cells (WBC) that naturally defend the body from any foreign pathogens would mistakenly think food, good intestinal bacteria, and the cells lining of the colon as invader and would send a response to phagocyte (engulf and destroy) bacteria and other foreign materials resulting in chronic inflammation and ulcerations inside the surface of the colon. Symptoms of UC include bloody diarrhea, rectal bleeding, an urgency to defecate and inability to defecate, abdominal and rectal pain, fever, fatigue, anemia, loss of appetite, and weight loss.

Risk Factors are:
Individuals with an overactive intestinal immune system
Inherit gene with ulcerative colitis
Ulcerative colitis generally occurs in both sex between the ages of 15-30 and 60+
Higher risk for Caucasian than any other race

TREATMENT OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS
There is no cure for ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is treated with multiple drugs or surgery. Doctors would prescribe UC patients with an anti-inflammatory drug to reduce the inflammation, immune system suppressor to suppresses the WBC response to prevent inflammation, and other drugs such as antibiotics, anti-diarrheal medication, pain reliever, and iron supplements to aid in the symptoms UC has caused in the colon. However, not all drugs will work for every individual, and depending on the severity, surgery is required. There are multiple ways surgery can be performed for patients with UC. Surgery can consist of removing part or the entire colon (large intestine and rectum) and reconstruction the small intestine forming a J-pouch to collect stools that are attached to the anus or create an opening in the abdominal for stool to be released.

According to the Healthcare Medicine Institute, a study has shown that acupuncture helps to eliminate ulcerative colitis. An experiment was conducted on ulcerative colitis patients that were randomly divided into two groups. Results show that group A patients that did a combination of acupuncture combined with herbal medicine and drugs had a total effective rate of 93.1% with 56 days of required care compared to group B patients who only received drugs had an overall effective rate of 75.86% with 81 days of care needed.

Our 4 years old son started having stomach pains. We went to a doctor and was given antibiotics for a week. When the pain did not go away, we did x-ray and ultrasound. The diagnosis was constipation without obstruction. For several weeks, we changed his diet, gave him supplements to help him go. He would go 2-3x a day with good amount but the pain remained. We went to see different doctors and a gastro pediatrician but they have no answers except to put him in Miralax everyday.  

2 months of agony and not knowing if there is something else that we should do. The stomach pain is becoming a part of our everyday life and we don't like it. We prayed and prayed and asked God for direction. We researched online and found Dr. Huang's website. I decided to try acupuncture but I didn’t want to go to a place with figurines and posters but in my mind I wanted a contemporary reliable acupuncture doctor. I prayed to God for a Christian Acupuncture Doctor. I searched the internet and God guided me to Dr. Kevin Huang and Agape Acupuncture.

After 2 months of treatment now the face inflammation and the face infection are under control, the pain has decreased too.

HEALING FROM INFECTIONS | DIGESTIVE DISORDER | SKIN CONDITION

After years of having stomach digestion issues due to a stomach gas infusion during a surgery, 2016 was a very hard year for me. I had two infections in my body and my immune system went out of control not knowing which infection to heal: my stomach not digesting the food/having pain under my right rib or a face infection getting worse with heat and dust; it was like everything affected my face. I went to see 2 dermatologist, one endocrinologist, one GI doctor and I received many comments from about 6 other different doctors. I had 10 medical test, from a face Biopsy to hormones test, nothing seemed to be out of control except that my blood was very thick and my white cell counts were going down while my red cells began to lose their shape due to the infection but there were no traces of the infection source. Nobody knew from where the infection was coming from.
     
Even when I didn’t take medicine for the past 15 years; now every prescribed medicine I took made my hands and legs swollen, the creams and topical ointments prescribed made my face worse and itchy, flaky or dry. I felt without drive and hopeless; my immune system was getting weaker and weaker as the Summer rose. I had my stomach inflated and swollen under the rib and in constant pain; I wasn’t digesting oils, protein, and eating spinach, meat, potatoes or Cilantro would make the face flare, depending on what I had ingested the pain increased or decreased.

Constantly in the morning time I woke up with swollen fingers and hand’s articulations pain, as I am a pianist by profession, those mornings were devastating. A bump in my eyelid began to grow, I began to feel disoriented and dizzy, unable to concentrate.

One night I said good bye to my husband, I felt like I was going to die. We prayed together and we ask for God’s will. I had the option to fly to the South of Mexico but we were concerned about my body’s weakness and the polluted air during the flight.

More than 10 doctors said that stomach and face are not related but my family doctor had a different approach, he was sure that the face infection was coming from the stomach; we had Ozone therapy and other natural medical treatments; with constancy the redness in the face was less intense, the pain was coming and going; but even when I was feeling better I wasn’t healing, those remedies worked to a certain point, not cured after all.

The medical bills began to increase until the moment when I was unable to pay more treatments.

I decided to try acupuncture but I didn’t want to go to a place with figurines and posters but in my mind I wanted a contemporary reliable acupuncture doctor. I prayed to God for a Christian Acupuncture Doctor. I searched the internet and God guided me to Dr. Kevin Huang and Agape Acupuncture.                   

After 2 months of treatment now the face inflammation and the face infection are under control, the pain has decreased too. I know that I still need time for my immune system to be cured, healed and stronger but I also need to pay all those expensive medical bills. I need to come back to Dr. Huang and his friendly staff to complete the healing recovery road but that will be my next story.

My Name is Austin. I am 19 years old and I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2006 when I was 12 years old. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is an Auto-Immune Disease that attacks the colon and causes severe diarrhea and bleeding.

My Mom and Dad took me to many specialist doctors and all of them said that there is no cure for UC and they all wanted get me on Drugs! One doctor even recommended to have my colon removed. Yes – at 12 years old.

After my colonoscopy and diagnosis I ended up on medical steroids.  The side effects of steroids are horrible (Major Face Swelling, acne, weight gain, etc..) In April 2008 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I was shocked and concerned due to my father having the same health issue. I had a very abnormal digestive process, bouts of diarrhea and lack of energy. I also felt bloated and weak. My food selection was limited. Different foods that I would eat would have an adverse affect on my digestive system. I always made sure I was close to a restroom. My condition was constantly on my mind and I wondered what the future held for me. Over all it was an unknown type of illness that would affect me down the road. I thought I would never have a normal life.

My MD prescribed two different types of medications Entocort and Mercaptopurine. The treatments offered to me were medications and doctor visits. I also had a Colonoscopy (upper and lower GI) and a CAT scan. While taking these medications I had side effects of weakness and joint pain. It maintained my symptoms more than reversed the disease. The medications stabilized my symptoms and I had an occasional flare up – even though I was taking my medications.

A friend referred me to Dr. Huang and I began coming to Natural Medicine Center on April 28, 2011. I was hoping that it would reverse the Crohn’s Disease and give me energy that would sustain me. The clinic had a professional - extremely nice atmosphere and very friendly. I was not very educated on natural medicine and not aware of everything it could do. Slowly I began to wean myself off the medications. Within the first 3 months I began to feel better. I had increased energy and quality of life. The process included different portions of the body stimulated via a needle to bring healing. I had very positive results! I’m totally free of drug medications. My symptoms have subsided drastically, energy level increased and my digestive system has stabilized.

Home and social life is great now! My disease used to be constantly in the fore thoughts of my mind and now it’s not. For 4½ years, I suffered from chronic diarrhea. I was always healthy and never got sick until the diarrhea. It started after the dentist gave me antibiotics for swollen gums. I did not have control over my bowel movements, and sometimes I had cramps. Food ran through me. I would have accidents. This affected everything. I could not go to meetings, and I had to be really quick doing things such as shopping.

The doctors ran different tests including a colonoscopy, but didn’t find anything. I wasted time and money, and nobody could tell me anything. I had tried so many other things that I thought I had to live with it.

I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and gastritis a year ago. It started with skin rashes, and I began to see a dermatologist. I also had stomach aches, and my stomach got worse. The acupuncture was painless, relaxing and rejuvenating, and it released stress.

Within the first day of getting the acupuncture and herbal medicine I noticed improvements. Within one week, I was 75% better and the cramps stopped. With the herbs and diet change, I have never had cramping again and my energy has improved. After 2 months of treatment, I have improved 100%.

I am thrilled about the results, and I feel blessed to be able to come to natural medicine. My family has been very supportive, and they are relieved to see such an improvement. I am so happy and blessed to had been referred to Dr. Huang and his wonderful staff of caring people. I am thanking God for healing my body and using Dr. Huang as his vessel to fulfill God's blessings.

I was at my wits end and in so much pain for months. Doctors kept telling me to have surgery and that there would be a 10% chance after surgery of having incontinence. I left the doctors that day in tears. My beautiful daughter said, "Mom surgery should be your last choice. I have a good friend in Long Beach that does acupuncture and practices Eastern medicine, let me call her." She said she would be happy to see me, but would need to see me at least 3 times a week. Well being over an hour away would not work, so she was more than happy to refer me to Dr. Huang at Agape Acupuncture. I tell you, this was a total God thing.

I walked in and knew I was led there by the Holy Spirit. Dr. Huang is a wonderful Christian who gives God all the glory. I have never had a doctor pray over me. The peace and comfort comes over you and you know that you are in the right place.

I had a tight sphincter muscle, hemorrhoids, and fissures. I could not walk without incredible pain. I would wake up 4-5 times a night from the pain and taking sitz' baths. At times I felt I could not go on. I was beside myself. After a few visits I was still in such pain and told the Dr. I think I was going to go and have the surgery as I could not take the pain any longer. He told me to hang in there with him. I did and am so grateful. I have my life back, pain free, and do not need surgery.
