My Dad saw an article in the paper for Natural Medicine and made an appointment for me to see Dr. Huang. My Name is Austin. I am 19 years old and I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2006 when I was 12 years old. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is an Auto-Immune Disease that attacks the colon and causes severe diarrhea and bleeding.
My Mom and Dad took me to many specialist doctors and all of them said that there is no cure for UC and they all wanted get me on Drugs! One doctor even recommended to have my colon removed. Yes – at 12 years old.
After my colonoscopy and diagnosis I ended up on medical steroids. The side effects of steroids are horrible (Major Face Swelling, acne, weight gain, etc..) At 8 years old, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (later Ankylosing Spondylitis), and for the next 10 years I was in and out of hospitals, always on different medications. These were some of the most trying times in my life. But the next 20 years or so I seemed to stabilize and was able to deal and “adapt” with my condition. About 2 years ago, however, it came back – with a vengeance! Without warning, my left knee blew up like a balloon! My lower back became stiff and painful, my ankles swelled up and I was laid up in bed for a whole month! I would eventually miss three months of work! It was like being a child again.
Once the drug doctors stabilized me, they put me on Indocin, then Plaquenil, but when I started reading about these drugs I realized that they were doing more harm than good! (Since then I have suffered damage to my left eye as a result.) Then in May 2004, I developed a whole new problem: my groin. I had never experienced pain in that area before and it was devastating! I got so desperate for relief I started taking Vioxx. But just when I was at one of the lowest times of my life, God brought me to the Agape Acupuncture, Inc.. I couldn’t believe how different and “opposite” it was from a drug doctor’s office. I figured the Lord brought me here for a reason so I decided (“reluctantly”) to try it. (I said “reluctantly” because everything was foreign to me: the acupuncture, teas, supplements, diet, etc.)

In April 2008 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I was shocked and concerned due to my father having the same health issue. I had a very abnormal digestive process, bouts of diarrhea and lack of energy. I also felt bloated and weak. My food selection was limited. Different foods that I would eat would have an adverse affect on my digestive system. I always made sure I was close to a restroom. My condition was constantly on my mind and I wondered what the future held for me. Over all it was an unknown type of illness that would affect me down the road. I thought I would never have a normal life.
My MD prescribed two different types of medications Entocort and Mercaptopurine. The treatments offered to me were medications and doctor visits. I also had a Colonoscopy (upper and lower GI) and a CAT scan. While taking these medications I had side effects of weakness and joint pain. It maintained my symptoms more than reversed the disease. The medications stabilized my symptoms and I had an occasional flare up – even though I was taking my medications.

In 2004, I begin to have numbness and pain in my joints, which affected every part of my life. It was hard for me to take care of my baby and do all the things a mother needed to do; change his diaper, bathe him, and even to carry him was painful.
