WHAT IS ECZEMA?
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that leads to red, dry, and itchy skin. The cause of eczema is unknown. Eczema is linked to an over-active immune system. The immune system is triggered by a substance inside or outside of the body. When the substance stimulates the body, the immune system responds by producing inflammation. Eczema is commonly found in children but can occur in adults. They tend to flare up periodically on the face, inside the elbows and the knees, and on hands and feet. Eczema is noncontagious and may clear up with time or get worse over time.
ECZEMA SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of eczema vary in each individual, and an outbreak can occur in different areas of the body throughout the various times of the year. An individual may experience dry and itchy skin that is usually severe at night. When scratched, fluid may leak and crust over, leaving the skin to feel raw, sensitive, and swollen. Over time, the skin will thicken, crack, scale, and turn into red to brownish-gray patches. For infants, they may experience eczema outbreaks on their head and scalp.

There is no cure for eczema. Treatments vary from medication to home remedies to help relieve itching and prevent new outbreaks, but not all treatment will work for everyone. It may take various treatments or home remedies for several months or years to control eczema. Topical cream or ointment prescribed by their doctor can help control itch and repair the skin, but with overuse of the medication, it can cause thin skin, affects the immune system, and have black box warning of the potential risk of cancer. Coming into Agape Natural Health for acupuncture treatment, all I hope for was to relieve my son itchiness and for him to get sleep but in return, I gained more than I asked for from acupuncture. At four months old, my son developed eczema on his cheeks. When he was old enough to crawl, it spread all over his neck, arms, and legs. He was covered in big, red spots that inflamed throughout his body. His skin was dry, flaky, and scaly that looked and felt like an alligator. There was not a spot on his arms, hands, and leg that wasn't eczema. Everything I did for my son did not help. He was miserable. His eczema kept him up all day and all night, causing him to be restless. I was restless, too.
When his pediatrician told me that it was just a baby rash, which is common in infants, it will eventually go away. Since it didn't go away and it came back worse than before, that was when his pediatrician diagnosed my son with eczema. What came across my mind was “are you kidding me!” I couldn't believe such a thing could happen to my precious little boy. I wasn't aware of what eczema was or have I seen them before so seeing my son acquire such condition was unbelievable.
We used everything from over the counter antihistamine cream, and body oil to prescription steroid cream and nothing helped to relieve the pain he was experiencing. His primary pediatrician even increased his steroid cream dosage and recommended other over-the-counter creams, but it just made his eczema worse. I felt hopeless for my son. Even with intensive research on eczema, everything I did for him, including his doctor recommendation and home remedies for eczema did not work. It was just a temporary relief. There was nothing modern medicine could do to help my little boy. The inflammation was unbearable that it made him irritable, grumpy, and itchier that he couldn't stay asleep for more than 15-30 minutes at a time. I was diagnosed with eczema and migraine headaches at 13 years old. I suffered with this condition for 9 years and felt nervous that it would effect my skin my whole life. The headaches limited me where I could not go to work. The migraine headaches caused extreme nausea, and I was very light and sound sensitive. It caused me to be sick and it was hard to talk with people or focus on anything. The eczema made my skin extremely itchy. I could not wear clothes that I wanted. I had sleeplessness at night from the irritation and it bothered me daily at work.
I went to several Dermatologists for the eczema and the treatments of topical and steroid based ointments typically lasted 3 months. The eczema would go away for only short amounts of time and then come back. The creams always irritated my skin, caused extreme burning and dried out surrounding areas not affected by eczema.

I developed Eczema on my arms when I was 18 years old. Then it started to spread when I was 21. I had red spots all over my neck and they were itchy and scaly. My skin felt hot and had scabs and I felt very uncomfortable. When I exercised, my skin would become irritated. In school it was hard for me to concentrate and socially I was always self-conscious. In the summer time I was limited to what I could wear, and I always wanted to cover my arms and neck. It was hard being a girl and wanting my skin to look pretty.
