When I was in Kindergarten, my parents noticed my face and legs swell up from water retention. After visiting a doctor, they said I had childhood onset, minimal change nephrotic syndrome.

My mom, being the research-warrior that she is, decided to take me to Agape Natural Health, and commit to a natural medicine regime: very limited sugar and salt in my foods, juicing and clean foods, plus acupuncture and herbs. I was young and couldn’t swallow the herbs yet, so we got creative and ground them up with a mortar and pistol and mixed them into applesauce.

July of 2017 marked the five year checkpoint without a relapse, so I was officially released from nephrotic care at CHOC Children’s hospital, the hospital that diagnosed my condition in the first place.

The doctors there were shocked and couldn’t figure out what switched in my steroid-dependent, young body. I was the first child to be released from that section of CHOC in two years. But I know that’s the healing work of God, using natural medicine, foods, and acupuncture to heal the body that He created.

I am now twenty years old, pursuing a degree in a field I’m passionate about, exploring the beauty of the world through friendships, relationships, and outdoor adventures, and truly using the second chance at life that God has given me. I couldn’t be more grateful.

Our journey with Parry-Romberg syndrome, an autoimmune condition, with Scleroderma, Linear Morphea, and Vitiligo, began with the first symptoms appearing in 2018 in my child at the age of 7. As a parent, witnessing my child’s health challenges was a heart-wrenching experience.

Finding effective treatment for our child became our top priority. At a young age of 9, on July 16, 2020, we discovered Agape Natural Health in Newport Beach, California, and embarked on a transformative medical journey under the care of Dr. Huang at Agape Natural Health. Their expertise in acupuncture, coupled with herbal supplements tailored to my child’s needs, offered hope during uncertainty.

Symptoms were first noted 2 years prior around age of 7, initially appearing as white color changes on the forehead or vitiligo. Despite undergoing treatment with another doctor without any improvement for vitiligo, over time, our child developed the left side of the face develop atrophy which was later diagnosed as scleroderma.

We were devastated and saddened by this horrible situation.

God led us to Dr. Huang at Agape Natural Health because we saw many testimonials and their clinic using natural health specializes in auto-immune and immune conditions with a lot of encouraging testimonials.

After our initial consultation with Dr. Huang, our family decided to start treatments at the age of 9 on July 16, 2020 with Agape Natural Health. Acupuncture every week and Herbs everyday were prescribed by Dr. Huang.

In September 2020, a follow-up with a medical doctor explained to us that Sophia’s condition is an autoimmune condition. There is damage caused by inflammation that leads to atrophy of tissue and fibrosis, disfiguring the face. It was highly advisable for Sophia to initiate standard care for localized scleroderma with weekly injectable medication, accompanied by another medication the day after. Additionally, there are protocols for active disease utilizing high-dose of medications for weeks. In another follow up in 2021, the medical doctor also was worried about risk of serious eye damage and serious neurological damage due to this autoimmune condition.

The doctor explained the benefits and risks involved in utilizing immunosuppressive medications to treat scleroderma. However, our family was reluctant to start the medications and would like to continue with Agape Natural Health for a few months first and then follow-up.

Over the next 3 years into September 2023, our child’s condition remained very stable and growing as a healthy, active, normal child with great quality of life. We continued to go to Agape Natural Health weekly for acupuncture and taking herbs while being monitored by the all the doctors for over 3 years without taking any of the immune suppressant medications.

After the MRI on September 24, 2023, the best news a parent could receive! The report said, “there was no significant subcutaneous edema or enhancement to suggest inflammation. There was also no evidence of skin thickening or abnormally enhancing masses within the face. Additionally, the contents of the orbits, paranasal sinuses, mastoid air cells, nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and visualized supraglottic larynx were all normal in appearance. The visualized portions of the brain were also normal.”

I will forever be grateful for Dr. Kevin and his staff. I am a 12-year-old girl, who had Scleroderma, thank God that I didn’t have the main symptoms. Scleroderma is a very rare disease. I was diagnosed around 9 years old. It affects my immune system and my face. My face is what I call a “light side-face” since my face is uneven.

It sadly looks way worse in pictures than in real life, which is the reason why I hate pictures. My parents had tried to find different solutions by going to different doctors for help, they all wanted to do things to me or just let it be. Some did try to help me but failed. I was first diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis about 13 years ago, and then was diagnosed with Lymphoma beginning of 2016. I became very stressed out when I learned of my condition. My ankles, knees, wrists, and elbows were badly affected. I was a teacher and needed accommodations to transit when I was in school, such as needing rollers on my stools so I didn't have to stand whenever I was helping my students. I first noticed unusual pain as the first symptom. I would still exercise, but I could not do yoga, pilates, spin classes, or any fitness classes that involved bending of my joints because it would put too much pressure on my joints.

My dad had Psoriasis and suffered severely; 95% of his skin was covered with psoriasis and there was no cure to it. He tried taking medicines and treatments but did not get better. I wish I could have prevented it early. I took different kinds of medications such as Enbrel for Psoriatic Arthritis that was prescribed by my rheumatologist. It is a weekly injection, and I took it for 12 years. The side effect of this drug was Lymphoma (a type of cancer). I had surgery in my neck and they found a small lymph that looked suspicious. It was at that time that I stopped taking Enbrel. I was also taking Methotrexate, and it raised my liver count. Methotrexate is a form of low dose chemotherapy, an immunosuppressive agent, that is very toxic for the liver. I still see my rheumatologist every 3 months plus getting blood work done. I thought the medications were working, they are very costly. I would spend about $1700 a month on the Enbrel shots. If I had to do it over again, I would do a more natural approach. The medications that I was taking weakened my immune system, and drug side effects was the reason for me getting diagnosed with lymphoma.

I became more aware and knowledgeable about natural treatments, did some research and on February 9th, 2016, I started coming to Agape Acupuncture to get acupuncture treatments and herbal medicine. My friends and family were supportive. When I first came to Agape Acupuncture, I immediately felt welcomed. The staff is very understanding and kind.
