PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME 

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a combination of physical or emotional symptoms that occur in over 90% of women. Researchers believed that PMS happens when estrogen and progesterone levels start decreasing drastically after the day of ovulation. Premenstrual syndrome can be mild to severe and may start one or two weeks before their menstrual period and disappear within four days after the start of their period. Severe PMS can interfere with everyday activities and may be a sign of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMMD). Premenstrual syndrome does go away when a woman no longer has a menstrual period. 

PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME SYMPTOMS

Everyone experiences premenstrual syndrome symptoms differently. Some may experience physical symptoms, emotional symptoms, or both. Physical symptoms of PMS may be abdominal bloating or cramping, gassiness, headache, backaches, swollen or tender breasts, and constipation or diarrhea. While others may experience emotional symptoms such as irritability, tiredness, insomnia, food cravings, tension or anxiety, depression, sadness, crying spells, and mood swings or anger. 

Risk Factors are:

Have a high level of stress.

Have a family history of depression or a personal history of either depression or postpartum depression. 

TREATMENT OF PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME

Premenstrual syndrome can be treated with over the counter and prescription medicine. Physical symptoms of PMS may be relieved with over the counter medication such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin. If over the counter medication does not work, prescription medicine or hormonal birth control may also help to reduce PMS symptoms. Emotional symptoms of PMS can be reduced with an antidepressant such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and anti-anxiety medicine.

HOW IS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (R.A.) TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS:

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disease (the immune system creates it’s on antibodies in the blood and mistakes parts of the body as a pathogen and attacks its own cells) that is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints; particularly the synovial joints. While the inflammation of the tissue surrounds the joints, the disease can cause injury and inflammation to other organs in the body. A joint is the point of connection where two bones meet and in between that joint is cartilage and soft tissue. Rheumatoid Arthritis can also destroy the cartilage in between the bones. Chronic inflammation can lead to destroy of the cartilage, bones, and ligaments in the surrounding tissues; causing the bones to be deformed. Because this disease attacks other organs it is also considered a systemic disease or rheumatoid disease. Some characteristics of Rheumatoid Arthritis are swelling, pain, stiffness, redness in the joints and fatigue, which can be mild or severe. However, the degree of the inflammation, pain and swelling does not directly affect the destroying of the bones. Persistent stiffness in the morning that digresses as the day goes on is an early sign of Rheumatoid Arthritis. This pain can last up to an hour or a few hours. Rheumatoid Arthritis pain can also be felt after sitting for long periods of time.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

There is no known cause for Rheumatoid Arthritis. In theory there are some risk factors. There is an increase in occurrence of Rheumatoid Arthritis in women whom have never been pregnant and in women that have given birth. Rheumatoid Arthritis is more common in women than in men. Statistics show that 70% more or women have Rheumatoid Arthritis than in men. There is genetic link to Rheumatoid Arthritis that can run in families. An individual with “specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes are at a greater risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. Other factors include cigarette smoking and increasing age.

TREATMENT:

Research studies show there isn’t a known cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis. A few goals of treatment are to reduce inflammation and manage pain, maximize joint function. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate test also called ESR measures the speed of red blood cells as they fall to the bottom of the glass testing tube. When abnormal proteins are present in the blood due to inflammation, red blood cells clump together and sink more quickly. This blood test is useful in detecting inflammation in the body that may be caused by some cancers, infections and auto-immunes diseases. X-rays are also taken to determine the joints that are affected by inflammation and to see if there had been damage to the bones. Drugs used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis are corticosteroids such as Prednisone to reduce joint inflammation and pain. Plaquenil (hydroychloroquine) is also a common drug among many to promote remission of the disease by preventing progressive joint destruction. Depending upon severity of the disease, surgery is needed to maximize joint mobility.

Resent study listed on website HealthDay Source: Arthritis & Rheumatism, news release, Nov. 28, 2012 states, “"Joint arthroplasty is successful in relieving the pain and disability caused by hip or knee arthritis," study author Dr. Bheeshma Ravi, from the University of Toronto and Women's College Research Institute, said in a journal news release. "While complication rates are low, there are some cases with serious consequences that include infection, joint dislocation, blood clots and even death."

ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (R.A.):

Acupuncture has been established and utilized for over 4000 years and is a safe and effective method of treatment for patients debilitated by Rheumatoid Arthritis. Acupuncture encourages the body to promote natural healing, improve functioning, and promote and restore health. This is done by inserting very thin needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation when needed at precise acupuncture points.

Acupuncture is safe and has an efficacious approach for treating Rheumatoid Arthritis. A desirable benefit of using acupuncture to treat RA is that it is drug-free and has the same effect to minimize pain. Treatment regimens that include prescription drugs can cause a tolerance and increased doses are needed to have an effect (depending on the individual). A study was done at Yiwu Central Hospital on 86 patients with IBD-D that was randomly divided into a control group and an observation group. The control group received herbal medicine three times a day over 30 days, and the observation group received herbal medicine (same as the control group) and acupuncture five times a week over 30 days. Results showed herbal medicine and acupuncture combined recovery rate was 34.9% with a total effective rate of 90.7% compared to recover rate of 18.6% and an overall effective rate of 79.1% for the control group.

CHRONIC LYME DISEASE SYMPTOMS 

Chronic Lyme disease has similar symptoms as the early stage of Lyme disease but with a lingering effect. DEPRESSION

Depression is a mental health disorder that persistently alters an individual mood. It affects their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION

Depression can be treated with medication, psychotherapy, or electroconvulsive therapy (ETC). Antidepressant medicines may help improve an individual mood, but it takes about two to four weeks for the medication to be effective. However, not all antidepressant medication work for every individual. Therefore, they would need to try different types of antidepressants to find out which works best for them. Psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and problem-solving therapy can help an individual with depression. If neither medication or psychotherapy helps improves depression, electroconvulsive therapy, and other brain stimulation therapy is an alternative option.

He complained about insomnia for five months and low spirits for one month due to a mental upset that occurred in his life. He was restless, had difficulty sleeping, and headaches. He couldn't concentrate, memory was deteriorating, and his speech was slow and incoherent. The patient developed fear and nervousness to the point where he had suicidal thoughts. After undergoing two acupuncture treatments, he was able to sleep for three to four hours, and his sensation of fear disappeared. He was still unable to concentrate more than an hour and still had headaches. On his tenth acupuncture treatment, he was able to sleep for six hours every night, his headache, irritation, and restlessness disappeared, and his behavior was back to normal. After the fourteenth treatment, all symptoms of depression was completely gone, his sleep schedule was back to normal, and he regained his memory. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that accelerates the life cycle of the skin cells. They cause the dead skin to buildup on the surface, leading to red lesions with thick silvery scale patches. HOW IS ASTHMA TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE? 

ASTHMA

Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways of the lungs. The bronchial tubes are sensitive, and it can easily be inflamed. When irritants trigger asthma, the bronchial tubes that carry oxygen into the lungs produce extra mucus. The excess mucus inflames and swells the airway causing the bronchial tubes to constrict, making it difficult for the individual to breathe. Asthma can worsen when fighting an infection, cold or flu. It can also interfere with individual daily activities and can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. 

ASTHMA SYMPTOMS

Not everyone with asthma will experience the same symptoms. Some may have symptoms a few days out of the year, while others may have symptoms every day. Asthma symptoms include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chest tightness or pain, coughing, and wheezing.

Have an immediate family with asthma. 

Have another condition such as allergies, atopic dermatitis, obesity, respiratory infections, and wheezing.

TREATMENT OF ASTHMA

There is no cure for asthma, but their symptoms can be controlled by treatment. Treatment for asthma varies by the person due to their age, symptoms, and asthma severity. Short-term treatment such as quick-relief medicine and allergy medication can provide temporary relief of symptoms. Quick-relief inhalers are inhaled directly into the lungs to open swollen airways during an asthma attack. Long-term medication is taken daily to prevent an asthma attack from occurring. Long-term medication is taken over some time to allow the easing of the airway inflammation and the prevention of mucus overproduction in the lungs. I am 89 years old, and I suffered ten years with trigeminal neuralgia on my lower left jaw. Trigeminal neuralgia has affected my personal life; I couldn't eat, chew, swallow, or speak. I would feel pain on my face all day, every day. It was so painful that I couldn't brush my teeth or sleep. 

My primary physician said it was typical for people my age to have trigeminal neuralgia and prescribed Carbamazepine to reduce grinding and pain. Cancer patients in the United States may soon find new and unconventional relief for their pain - a regimen of piercing the skin with scores of needles, commonly known as acupuncture. Cancer patients are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of combining acupuncture with western cancer treatments. The ancient method of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is currently supported by the National Institute of Health, which asserts that it can be used as part of a “total treatment plan” for cancer.

“TCM has been used to treat cancer and the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy for cancer patients for a long time in China… Patients’ cancer can be controlled and be inhibited from spreading out to the other parts of body,” said Dr. Zhang Xie L.Ac., a former clinical professor of the Guangxi Medical University in mainland China. Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the body’s endorphins and hormones, effectively controlling pain and irritations from the effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Both styles of medicine have their different uses. “For urgent care patients suffering from acute illnesses such as heart attack, severe infection, trauma, and so forth, western medicine is recommended. For chronic conditions and pain syndromes such as sinusitis, migraines, insomnia, chronic fatigue, P.M.S., and so forth, acupuncture and TCM are recommended,” said Dr. Zhang. Acupuncturists seek a holistic approach to healing their patients, focusing not only upon alleviating the pain, but with other aspects of their lifestyle such as nutrition and dietary guidelines as well.

This attitude often conflicts with the western approach to medicine but now, experts are looking to combine to complement each other. Currently, the western approach includes several methods of curing cancer. One of the most well known is chemotherapy, where the body is fed toxic drugs such as Amifostine, Dronabinol, and Megestrol. The cancer cells, which grow faster than normal cells, absorb more of these toxins than normal cells over the same time intervals, leading to their termination. However, common side effects of this treatment include hair loss, nausea, and vomiting. The second most common method is radiation treatment, where the cancer cells are killed by an x-ray bombardment. This typically leaves the skin red and irritated and the patient feeling nauseated. The cancer patient can also opt to have the tumor surgically removed, which relieves the strain and pressure on the nerves that the tumor can cause, but leaves the patient with pain from the operation.

To find relief from these conditions, combination treatments are now being used. Generally they vary from individual to individual depending on medical conditions and other factors. Some patients rely solely on the acupuncturist to alleviate the ailments left from their western therapies. Others seek an approach that requires coordination between the acupuncturist and the physician administering the western medicine. Both experts check the patient’s medical records and collaborate on a schedule, switching off between chemotherapy and radiation treatment, following with acupuncture to treat the ailments caused by these treatmens.

“We work around [the doctors’] schedule,” says Dr. Janet Yeh L.Ac., Natural Medicine in California. Dr. Yeh, also commented that this combination therapy is not uniform in its approach to healing, she said, “Sometimes it’s very effective. But each case is individual and depends upon where the cancer is as well.”

Since acupuncture needles are five times thinner than regular injection needles, they are doubly beneficial because they cause very little pain and alleviate pain from treatment. Some acupuncturists assert, however, that the benefits go beyond the dulling of pain. Many proponents of TCM claim that an invisible life force known as “qi” is also stimulated by acupuncture, and increases an individual’s ability to heal oneself. Whether the needles conjure up “qi” energy to assist in healing the patient’s cancer is highly debatable since its existence and healing power is difficult to ascertain. 

So what is the future for this crossover of therapies in the West? With growing support for this treatment and long-standing approval from TCM acupuncturists, prospects appear hopeful. “I think it’s good combining western and eastern medicine to treat patients, including cancer patients,” says Dr. Zhang. “Both medicines help each other. Patients can get the best results and less side effects.”

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate how the body uses its energy. Inflammation from Hashimoto's often lead to hypothyroidism when left untreated. Migraine headache is a neurological disorder that causes reoccurring headaches of varying intensity to one side of the head. It consists of throbbing or pulsing sensation pain that can last between four to 72 hours. A migraine headache often coincides with visual disturbance, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and sound. 

MIGRAINE HEADACHES SYMPTOMS

Migraine headaches symptoms can vary person by person and can occur before, during, or after a migraine. Symptoms of migraine can progress between four stages: prodrome, aura, attack, and post-drome phases.

In the prodrome stage, a person can detect a migraine one or two days before it occurred based on slight changes to their body. They will notice modest mood changes, have food cravings, stiff neck, uncontrollable yawning, increase in thirst, and urination.

Some people may experience symptoms in the aura stage for 20 to 60 minutes before or after a migraine transpire. Symptoms include visual phenomena and vision loss. Attack stage usually occurs when the migraine is untreated, and they last between four and 72 hours. Migraine can attack a few times or happen several times a month. After experiencing a migraine, people may feel drained and thoroughly washed out. However, any sudden movement in the post-drome phase may trigger migraine pain to arise again for a short-term.

HOW IS CROHN’S DISEASE TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

Crohn’s disease is a chronic and irremediable disease that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are an autoimmune disease-causing enduring inflammation and irritation to the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s inflammation commonly occurs at the end of the ileum (small intestine) and at the cecum (the beginning of large intestine) where they connect. There is no cure for Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease can be treated with specific medication based on the severity and location of the condition. Medication such as steroids and immunosuppressants, aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, and immunomodulators can be prescribed to help control, sustain flair-ups and reduce inflammation. HOW IS SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS (S.L.E.) TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

WHAT IS SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS?

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease that causes inflammation, pain and swelling in the joints. SLE, is an auto-immune disorder; in which their origin isn’t easily detected. Auto-immune disorders are a result of the body attacking its own body tissues and creating antibodies that began to fight the healthy tissue. All treatments are directed towards managing symptoms. Lupus affects the kidneys, joints lungs, nervous system, others organs of the body and skin. Here are some characteristics symptoms of SLE, fatigue (related to inflammatory response), weight loss, fever, blood clots and hair loss are all non-specific symptoms of SLE and can be experienced with other disorders. However, it is the severity of these symptoms that causes concern to the individual. Individuals may also have stomach pain, poor circulation (fingers and toes) and heartburn. However, diagnosis of SLE is determined through a series of blood test and other characteristic symptoms such as, rashes (butterfly rash on cheeks), rash on skin due to Sun exposure, mouth sores, arthritis (may also need joint replacement), neurologic impairment, lung and heart inflammation, kidney problems (blood in the urine or protein) leading to low kidney function and kidney failure which can lead to death. Lupus flares differ from patient to patient. There are times when the disease is active and then there are times when the patients are in remission. 

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

The symptoms of SLE varies from person to person, flare ups of the disease are distinguished uniquely between individuals. Inherited tendencies, sunlight, viruses and drug allergies are suspected to be the cause of the inflammatory response. Also, individuals with SLE have an impaired ability to clear old cells and damaged cells from the body which causes an immune response. Lupus starts around the 20s – 30s and is common in Asians and African Americans. This auto-immune disease has many symptoms. 

MODERN MEDICINE TREATMENT | DRUG MEDICINE:

Based on the severity of your symptoms, if your Physician suspects SLE; a series of blood test will be drawn to determine if an individual will be diagnosed with SLE. If the individual has SLE the blood test results will be abnormal. The white blood cell count and red blood cell count will be low. There will be a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) present in nearly all individuals with SLE. Although, ANA is present you can have ANA and not have SLE. If an individual has SLE, specific antibodies will be present that show an immune system problem; anti-double-strand DNA (called anti-dsDNA), anti-Smith (anti-Sm) or antiphospholipid antibodies will be present. These antibodies are potential harm to the fetus, causing miscarriage, blood clots and difficulty with memory. Because there is no cure for Lupus, treating it is a challenge.

The severity of your symptoms and the symptoms an individual is experiencing determines the treatment. Individuals with joint pain or muscle pain, fatigue and rashes receive anti-inflammatory therapy also known as NSAIDs. These drugs decrease pain and swelling. Advil, Motrin and Naproxen are the drugs most used in treating symptoms of Lupus. Because SLE is a chronic disorder the individual whom take these drugs can develop liver and kidney damage. Antimalarial drugs may also be prescribed. Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine), this drug treat and prevent malaria. These drugs also relieve the some symptoms related to SLE, which are blood clotting, mouth sores, rashes, fatigue and joint pain. Immune suppressants and corticosteroids are also used to help with inflammation and stop the immune response related to Lupus. Often the side effects of these drugs may increase the risk for infection or cause major side effects. The Physician may lower the dose due to side effects or stop the drug when the individual goes into remission. It’s important to be in compliance with treatment by doing blood work and lab test frequently to adjust treatment as needed.
