What is Chronic Lyme Disease?

 The Mayo Clinic describes Lyme disease as an illness caused by borrelia bacteria. Humans usually get Lyme disease from the bite of a tick carrying the bacteria. Ticks that can carry borrelia bacteria live throughout most of the United States. But Lyme disease is most common in the upper Midwest and the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states. It's also common in Europe and in south central and southeastern Canada.

You're at risk of Lyme disease if you spend time where the ticks live, such as grassy, brushy or wooded areas. Taking safety measures in these areas can lower the risk of Lyme disease. Chronic Lyme disease occurs when a person who’s treated with antibiotic therapy for the disease continues to experience symptoms. The condition is also referred to as post Lyme disease syndrome or post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, approximately 10 to 20 percent of people who are treated with the recommended antibiotics will have disease symptoms that persist after they complete treatment. These symptoms can include fatigue, joint or muscle aches, and cognitive dysfunction. They may last up to six months or longer. These symptoms can interfere with a person’s normal activities and may cause emotional distress as a result.

Chronic Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is acquired by an infected tick bite that carries the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. In most cases, Lyme disease can be cured within 2-4 weeks with oral antibiotic treatments if diagnosed in the early stage. However, Chronic Lyme Disease is when an individual still experiences a persistent ongoing symptom for more than six months after completing their antibiotic therapy treatment. Hi Dr. Huang,  I hope you have been well. This review is long overdue but I promised I'd get it over to you so here it is: I woke up one morning and noticed whenever I tried to close my right eye it would stay slightly open. Since I hadn't been sleeping well I just thought it was something that would go away with some rest. I went to bed that next night and even though my eye stayed slightly open I felt like I got a good night's rest, just to wake up the next morning with my eye open a little more. I pointed it out to my wife who thought I was messing with her but then once she realized I was serious she went to Google - Bell's Palsy. We read that it was something that would heal itself over time or Google also suggested if we went into a doctor a steroid shot might help. Not wanting a steroid shot, I figured I'd try my other option and wait it out. 

Over the next couple of days the palsy spread from my right eye to the entire right side of my face. I had no movement but I still had feeling. It was definitely a conversation starter, I told really good pirate jokes, and I literally had a fun side and a serious side. All joking aside, I felt like there had to be a better option than just waiting it out. 

We found Dr. Huang online and after reading many reviews about people who were successfully treated for Bell's Palsy, we gave him a call. His staff was kind from the beginning. Our initial consultation was done over the phone and he explained how acupuncture and herbs would help the nervous system to heal in my face and he was confident he could help me make a full recovery. I went in for my first round of treatments and it was the first time in a few days that I could sense my muscles again. I'm not saying I got movement back immediately, but before the treatment the muscles on the right side of my face felt like they were gone. It is a hard sensation to explain unless you've felt it yourself. With each subsequent visit that feeling of sensing muscles and eventual movement grew stronger. 

By the time I completed my treatment plan a little over a month later I was at least 98% better. Dr. Huang explained that the last 5% of the healing process is what takes the longest time. I recommend Dr. Huang and Dr. Yeh. They are professional, friendly and caring. I researched many places and ended up coming here because they have a good reputation in the area and are known for their medical expertise. When I first came to the Natural Medicine Center, I wasn’t even thinking cancer. I came because I had a lump in my salivary gland. But God working through Dr. Huang convinced me to go see a medical doctor for a proper diagnosis, before he would treat me. It was then that I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Tonsil Cancer in October 2010. I went into shock; I was overwhelmed with fear – not knowing what to do next. I had a mass on my neck the size of a golf ball. I had to stop working, no social life and I had sores in my mouth, tongue and throat.  

The ENT gave me 2 choices: chemo/radiation or surgery. To surgically remove the tumor he would have to dig out the cancer followed by reconstructive surgeries and tubes for drainage. The ENT wanted to try chemo/radiation first. I underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments together with natural medicine. I began acupuncture and herbs at Natural Medicine Center from December 2010 to March 2011. I hoped that the natural medicine would strengthen me to get through the modern medicine chemo/radiation and restore me back to health. The three types of treatments worked together. My Oncologist prescribed me morphine that I was supposed to take 2 every 4 hours but I did not want to be a zombie, so I took only 2 a day. I believe acupuncture helped with that. I had a g-tube so I could not eat solid foods. I also had a biopsy surgery to make sure the cancer didn’t spread. It was hard, it wiped me out physically but I had to trust God through it all.

It was a long journey and feeling better did not start right away because I was doing chemotherapy and radiation at the same time. My friends and family were supportive but my husband was resistant about natural medicine until he spoke with Dr. Huang. I felt a peace and God’s presence here at this clinic. I was able to keep my strength up and I was told I would experience depression during the chemotherapy and radiation. But getting treatments here helped me with that. Because of the chemotherapy and radiation I was told I could lose at least 40 lbs but because of receiving acupuncture and herbs, I was able to maintain my weight and stay strong. Natural medicine assisted my body in healing naturally.

I’m back to normal and I’m back at work. My friends and family are pleased and happy. God has blessed me with a lot of clients. I am very happy, ecstatic! Dr. Huang would pray over me and his medical staff was also loving and encouraging. I am a believer in natural medicine and I will incorporate acupuncture in my life forever. About 6 months before seeking treatment, I started to notice my shoulder and left arm becoming still over a 4 week period; after I had been lifting weights at home. Eventually, it became very difficult to lift my shoulder higher than parallel to the ground. It was very difficult to do work at my computer and difficult to fasten my bra! I was very frustrated and surprise to found out it was Frozen Shoulder Syndrome. I was always a very healthy person and took good care of myself so it was very frustrating not to have full health. I was mad at having a sports injury when I had always tried to be so careful when exercising. I saw my doctor, who didn’t really have any real suggestions other than physical therapy. I took Tylenol for pain but I could not take any NSAIDs because I am allergic to them, so I couldn’t reduce the inflammation. Tylenol would relieve some pain temporarily but wasn’t giving me any range of motion back in my shoulder/arm. I was getting depressed that this wouldn’t heal on its own and I did not want to do steroid injections.

I thought acupuncture might be a better option, so in 2010 I start coming to Natural Medicine Center. I had no prior experience with natural medicine so I did not know what to expect.  I hoped to reduce the inflammation and hopefully get full range of motion back. My friends and family were supportive. The clinic had a friendly and welcoming staff - very professional and cared about your progress. At Natural Medicine Center I received acupuncture, herbal medicine and a nutrition guideline.

I had treatments 2-3 times a week for about 10 weeks. I took the natural herbs as well that Dr. Huang prescribed and adjusted my diet. I started to feel better after about 5-6 treatments; when I could see that I could move my shoulder a little bit more and was not having so much pain. I regained 100% mobility in my left shoulder and arm. I am pain free! It’s been so great to finally feel healthy again and be able to focus more effectively on my job and to exercise without pain. The staff at Natural Medicine Center is always helpful, pleasant and very professional and seemed to understand the patients’ needs well.  Dr. Kevin Huang is great! The Oncologist told me I had CIN1 (vaginal cancer cells) and said to come back in 6 months. Then after that time if it had advanced to the CIN2 stage, then they would do a laser procedure that only took three seconds but was expensive and very painful so anesthesia and hospitalization is required. Being very disappointed with the lack of any helpful information I decided to do something about it myself.

A few months later at the car wash I saw their sign saying Acupuncture and Natural Medicine. I went in and enrolled on the spot. Dr. Kevin Huang said the herb was fine but not enough. He started treating me very aggressively to help strengthen the immune system.

Just had that 6 month check up. The Oncologist’s face looked rather blank after examination, and all he could reply was “I don’t see anything”.

My decision not to sit back and wait, but to have taken this into my own hands was a good choice. However I am certain that the supplements, herbal teas, and acupuncture greatly attributed to getting rid of these pre-cancer cells.

Always being interested in Acupuncture but not knowing anyone who had tried it, I am actually grateful that I had something to take me into them. Through their lab diagnosis it was also discovered that I have Epstein Bar Syndrome and a very ill immune system. Since the start of treatment these additional conditions show great improvement.

In 1993, the American Cancer Society predicted that about 33% of Americans would eventually develop some form of cancer. More Americans die from heart disease than from any other illness. According to Time magazine “Special Issue”, Fall 1996, around 60,000 heart valves were replaced each year and between 1992 and 1993, there were 698 pericardium replacements. On the average, there are 1400 hearts transplanted annually in America, with 2361 hearts replaced in 1995 alone. And except during the 1918 influenza pandemic, heart disease has been the number one killer of Americans each year since 1900. A recent article in Prevention magazine noted that one easy way to reduce weight and lessen the risks of heart disease is to decrease television time to one hour a day.

Below are alarming statistics regarding health and wellness in the United States.

Each year, around 500,000 Americans suffer from stroke. One in four American adults have high blood pressure (hypertension) and one third are not even aware of the condition. Hypertension statistics are among the most difficult to determine, in part due to the number of non-symptomatic patients. Further, rates for males and females are often combined. For example, although the rate for Korean Americans is estimated to be 16% of the population, it has been found that the rate for men is closer to 22%, while that for women is only 3%. In general, Asians have hypertension at lower rates than other ethnic groups. The rates for hypertension are exceptionally higher for African-Americans. It is a leading health concern for African-Americans and those with hypertension are 5 times more likely to develop chronic heart failure and 10 times more likely to suffer from kidney failure than the general population. Contributing factors may include obesity, high sodium intake, low potassium intake (due to low fruits and vegetables consumption), and socio-economic pressures.

Over 40% of deaths in the U.S. are due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is estimated that more than 1 in every 5 persons has some form of CVD (which also includes hypertension, stroke, and rheumatic heart disease).

That same year, about 44,300 females died from breast cancer, 14,800 died from ovarian cancer, and 41,400 males died from prostate cancer. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that women who took synthetic estrogen for six or more years beyond menopause had a 45% greater risk of breast cancer. In women 60 to 64, the risk rose to 71%. The American Cancer Society study of 240,000 women showed that those who took synthetic estrogen for at least six years had a 40% increase risk of fatal ovarian cancer. In 1997, the American Cancer Society published the incidence of cancer in the U.S. from 1988 to 1992.  These statistics stated that African-American males and Anglo-American males have the highest rates of cancer, while Korean and Native American women have the lowest.

25 million Americans are affected by osteoporosis. These are mostly women, over the age of 50. Osteoporosis results in 1.5 million fractures per year, costing patients $10 billion in hospital and nursing home care.

Between 1983 and 1993, the number of hip replacements increased from 49,000 to 83,000. Knee replacements almost quadrupled to 131,000 in the U.S. between 1983 and 1993.

Genital herpes, caused by the herpes simplex virus, affects 20 million Americans, with 500,000 new cases annually.

16 million Americans are plagued with Type I or Type II diabetes. Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) is of special interest to nutritionists, and shows wide divergence in prevalence rates. The CDC reported in 1993, the rates of NIDDM by population group, determined through national surveys and specific studies: African Americans, 9.6 percent; American Indians, 5-50 percent (depending on tribal affiliation); Cuban Americans, 9.1 percent; Japanese Americans, women – 16 percent, men – 20 percent; Puerto Ricans, 10.9 percent; and Caucasian American, 6.2 percent. Other differences have been noted. Native Hawaiians have twice the rate of Koreans and Filipinos living in the United States. Japanese, Asians, Indians, and Samoans have shown rapidly increasing rates after immigrating to the U.S. as compared to other Asians and Pacific Islanders.

Sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy (sudden overpowering episodes of daytime sleepiness) affect 200,000 Americans and insomnia affects about 9%.

There are more than 44,000 cornea and 6200 sclera repairs and replacements performed each year in the United States.

Since 1988, there have been more than 23,000 liver transplants.

The death rate from asthma, which attacks 12 million Americans annually, has grown 6% each year since the late 1970s.

11,000 American people have become paralyzed each year due to spinal cord injuries.

HIV infection and AIDS have hit ethnic groups disproportionately. Over half of AIDS cases occur in African-Americans and Mexican-Americans, although they comprise less than 1/4 of the total U.S. population. These figures are even more alarming for women and children: 75% of AIDS cases in women occur among African-Americans and Mexican-Americans; and 80% of cases among children are African-Americans and Mexican-Americans. As of 1995, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that the total number of cases (501,310) were distributed as follows: cases among Asians/Pacific Islanders living in the U.S., 3,457; cases among African-Americans, 170,271; cases among Mexican-Americans, 87,387; and cases among Native Americans, 1,283.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) may be caused by many primary conditions, particularly diabetes and hypertension. Incidence rate (by percentage in each group) varies by ethnicity. Renal failure among Mexican-Americans showed that hypertension was the primary diagnosis in 40% of cases among non-Hispanic African-Americans, but for only 25% of cases in Hispanic African-Americans. The reverse was true for diabetes, which accounted for 25% of cases among non-Hispanic African-Americans, and for 39% of cases in Hispanic African-Americans. Diabetes was the primary cause of ESRD in 27% of non-Hispanic Anglo-Americans, but for 45% of Hispanic-Americans. This accounts for the variation in rates found in the broader categories of African-Americans and Anglo-Americans.

Infant mortality rates are some of the most detailed, demonstrating a large variation between ethnic groups. The gap between Anglo-Americans and African-Americans infant deaths has widened since 1950. Those for many Asians/Pacific Islanders and Hispanics living in the U.S. are lower than for Anglo-Americans, but not for all Asian-Americans and Mexican Americans. The rates for native Hawaiians and Puerto Ricans are higher. Rates for Native Americans are also high. Discrepancies are thought due largely to premature and low-birth weight births.

Overweight is increasing in most U.S. population groups. It has gone up 36% since 1960.

Two and half years ago I had a foot injury. Freckles the dog stepped on my right foot. It was a contusion, later developing joint pain. From this first injury it appeared to move around my foot, to drop foot-(balance), then partial tear around ankle area. I went to two different physical therapist, still having very much inflammation and discomfort. My daughter seeing I was suffering with terrible pain (a 7 out of 10) suggested I try acupuncture.

“It was just a matter of time. Then in February my symptoms hadn’t come back and I kept fighting everyday to avoid the vertigo from coming back.”

It all started in March 2012, when I was at work and noticed I was feeling a bit dizzy. I had no idea what it was. I’m a person that has a proper diet and live a productive healthy lifestyle. As I sit in my break room just thinking about the last thing I ate that made me feel dizzy and thought, that couldn’t of been it. My dad had picked me up from work as I couldn’t function anymore. As I get to my house I couldn’t stop vomiting and was feeling miserable with a painful headache. I fell asleep and woke up 3 hours later and it was gone. I had no idea what it could have been but I continued my day normally as I do every other day. Then about a month later on April I felt the same exact feeling as I did the month before. My dad had to pick me up from work and had to go home again. As I continue to live a productive healthy lifestyle I wouldn’t get it again for another 2 months and got it a few times in July and several times in August, September and October. I was feeling miserable and thought it was an early sign that maybe my life was coming to an end. I went ahead to do my own research as to why I was getting dizzy a lot. I was googling all of my symptoms and it was due to an inner ear problem.

I went to Mexico in September to get further treatment. I went to see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor and saw that I had some sort of rupture in my ear due to some injury that I had as a child. He then sent me to an audio specialist to do a few testings on my ear. After 2 hours were tested I got the results and went back to my ENT doctor and as he reads the results he sees that I have been diagnose with Meniere’s disease. This disease includes recurring episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), fullness in the ear, and nausea. My doctor also told me to have a very restricted diet as to not have any high amounts of salt, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol and caffeine. He said by eliminating or reducing these foods I may reduce my symptoms. The doctor then prescribed me few medications. As I take the medication I felt a like it was going away slowly and maybe lasted about 2 weeks as all of my symptoms came back. I did not know what to do anymore as I thought I had done everything possible to cure my disease. As I spoke with other people via online with Meniere’s disease they had told me that it’s a disease that I would have to live with for the rest of my life and to know what foods I’m eating as to what could been triggering me to get vertigo. After having a restricted diet I was still getting the symptoms and at this point was lost and didn’t know what to do anymore.

Then my sister who works at Natural Medicine Acupuncture and herbs told the doctor about my symptoms. The doctor wanted to see me and have a consultation and talk to him about my symptoms. He then said he can help me with a positive tone and not to worry because he’s had patients in the past with Meniere’s disease and was able to help them before and could help me if I follow a simple program. He wanted to see me 3 times a week for an acupuncture visit and to take the herbs he provides everyday 2 times a day. So I decided to take the program which at this point I was desperate for anything to cure my disease. On November 2, 2012 was my first day of the program. After week I felt like it was going away slowly. On the 2nd week everything was going fine and I felt like my symptoms where going away slowly. Then in December my symptoms came back. Every time my symptoms would come back it would last about 12 hours. The doctor then told me not to worry as I should keep taking my herbs every day and keep eating healthy. My symptoms disappear and came back on January and got them several times and the doctor told me to not worry as he would be doing his best to cure me. I kept fighting and I knew if I keep following with the treatment I know it would disappear soon.

It was just a matter of time. Then in February my symptoms hadn’t come back and I kept fighting everyday to avoid the vertigo from coming back. It is now July and my symptoms have not returned. The doctor has done everything he can to help my disease. He was very positive he can help me and was not going to give up until it was gone. It has been more than 5 months since my last vertigo and I continue each day to fight and live a healthier life. With the power of God and Dr. Huang anything can be done.
