When I was in Kindergarten, my parents noticed my face and legs swell up from water retention. After visiting a doctor, they said I had childhood onset, minimal change nephrotic syndrome.
My mom, being the research-warrior that she is, decided to take me to Agape Natural Health, and commit to a natural medicine regime: very limited sugar and salt in my foods, juicing and clean foods, plus acupuncture and herbs. I was young and couldn’t swallow the herbs yet, so we got creative and ground them up with a mortar and pistol and mixed them into applesauce.

Six years ago, I found myself battling HBP (High Blood Pressure) due to overwhelming stress. Then, to my devastation, shock, and horror, about three years ago, I received the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis—a progressive autoimmune disorder where my immune system attacks my central nervous system, causing lesions. Neurologists informed me that I had multiple lesions on my brain. The left side of my body became weak to the point where I couldn’t walk. I have been struggling with Systemic Sclerosis, also known as scleroderma, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), Anxiety, and Stress for about three years now. Systemic Sclerosis, an autoimmune disease, has particularly affected me as it causes the body to attack itself. In my case, inflammation of the esophagus, stomach pain, and constant heartburn.

At four months old, my son developed eczema on his cheeks. When he was old enough to crawl, it spread all over his neck, arms, and legs. He was covered in big, red spots that inflamed throughout his body. His skin was dry, flaky, and scaly that looked and felt like an alligator. There was not a spot on his arms, hands, and leg that wasn't eczema. Everything I did for my son did not help. He was miserable. His eczema kept him up all day and all night, causing him to be restless. I was restless, too.
When his pediatrician told me that it was just a baby rash, which is common in infants, it will eventually go away. Since it didn't go away and it came back worse than before, that was when his pediatrician diagnosed my son with eczema. What came across my mind was “are you kidding me!” I couldn't believe such a thing could happen to my precious little boy. I wasn't aware of what eczema was or have I seen them before so seeing my son acquire such condition was unbelievable.
We used everything from over the counter antihistamine cream, and body oil to prescription steroid cream and nothing helped to relieve the pain he was experiencing. His primary pediatrician even increased his steroid cream dosage and recommended other over-the-counter creams, but it just made his eczema worse. I felt hopeless for my son. Even with intensive research on eczema, everything I did for him, including his doctor recommendation and home remedies for eczema did not work. It was just a temporary relief. There was nothing modern medicine could do to help my little boy. The inflammation was unbearable that it made him irritable, grumpy, and itchier that he couldn't stay asleep for more than 15-30 minutes at a time. Temperature Control and Regulation
In a sense, the body is a small universe with a heat and energy giver, exemplifying the sun within a solar system. The hypothalamus of the brain acts as a “thermostat” to control body temperature. This homeostatic mechanism maintains 37 degrees Celsius (or 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in a healthy person. It not only controls the external temperature but also internal temperature of important organ systems.
When the body is exposed to a cold environment and the temperature begins to drop, the hypothalamus senses this change and triggers heat-generating and heat-conserving activities. Small groups of muscle cells are stimulated to involuntarily contract - an action called shivering. These muscular contractions produce heat, which warm the body. At the same time, blood vessels within the skin also constrict to reduce blood flow, which allow heat to be retained in deeper tissue.

Similarly, if a person becomes over heated, the temperature control center of the brain triggers a series of changes that promote loss of body heat. Sweat glands in the skin are stimulated to secrete watery perspiration. As the water evaporates from the surface, heat is carried away and the skin is cooled down. At the same time, the brain center causes blood vessels in the skin to dilate. This allows the blood that carries heat from deeper tissue to reach the surface where more heat is lost to the outside. Also, the brain center stimulates increased heart rate, causing a greater volume of blood to move into the surface vessels and an increase in breathing rate allowing more heat carrying air to be expelled from the lungs.
The 14 vertical organ systems (female reproductive, male reproductive, liver, gallbladder, heart, small intestine, pericardium, lymphatic, stomach, spleen, lung, large intestine, kidney, and urinary bladder) have different internal temperatures, as do the seasons. If there is an imbalance of internal environment, the organ systems show different symptoms or illnesses. The internal temperature variations of foods and herbs are able to balance the internal temperatures of the organ systems.

“I was Stage 4 head, neck, throat cancer that spread to my lungs, my survival was low and I am now free of cancer according to my last PET scan. The fact that they can’t see it on a scan is pretty amazing to me!”
I was diagnosed on August 5, 2013 with Stage 4 Head, Neck and Throat Cancer. I was scared and worried. My condition basically kept me locked down at home on my couch and it was lonely. It kept me fatigued all the time with a dry mouth and limited me from doing cardio. It limited me from going out in the sun and kept me from the beach and riding my bike. I suffered with this condition for 1 year.
I had radiation to the throat area, chemotherapy for 5 weeks - 1 every week during 24 radiation treatments to the throat. The second round was 1 every 3 weeks for 6 months. I had a throat tube put in because I couldn’t breath when I went into the ER, and I was there for a month. The tracheostomy tube did not come out for 4 months because the tumor was wrapped around my esophagus. When they took the tube out and did another scan, they found that the cancer had spread to my lungs. They did a needle biopsy and found out that it was the same from my throat and that it had spread. It was a cancerous lung nodule 8mm that spread from my throat.
I had 6 rounds of chemotherapy for the lungs. I was also on medications for pain (morphine and hydrocodone) and Xanax for anxiety. I didn’t like any of it because the whole process of treatments made me miserable, and I had a lot of anxiety with the chemotherapy treatments.
I was always a believer in natural remedies and I read a lot about it first. I came to Agape Acupuncture on February 6, 2014 and found Dr. Huang to be knowledgeable and that they were really concerned about me and very supportive. I found the clinic to be fantastic with excellent customer service and a clean facility - sweet people over here, honest and reliable. I hoped to find healing of my cancer all the way naturally instead of with drugs. I started acupuncture treatments along with natural herbs and diet guidance.
After I started coming to Agape Acupuncture, I have been getting better everyday and it is promoting to heal the body naturally. Socially I can get out a little more and exercise more. Natural health and wellness are determined by many factors such as food, nutrition, environment, emotions, exercise, sleep, lifestyle, healthcare, and medical treatment. It is not enough to only give attention to one aspect and ignore the rest. All of these important components must work together simultaneously and be synchronized to completely benefit the body.

Food is certainly an essential aspect of health and wellness. It is a medical treasure that humans have used for thousands of years for survival. The body is often being abused with wrong and junk foods, instead of healing and strengthening the body with good and proper foods. The only way to fully understand whether a food is good or bad for the body is through proper education.
If wrong foods are not controlled, diseases cannot be treated effectively. For example, a diabetic patient came to our clinic with a blood sugar level of 285. She had congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and severe edema in her ankles, knees, hips, belly button and lower ribs. She was also overweight. She was on 40 units of insulin each day and medication for her heart and the high blood pressure. She came to us saying, “I am dying, I am dying”. Upon completion of her diagnostic examination and reviewing her personal and medical history, we found out that she was drinking three glasses of orange juice and lots of sodas every day, using butter, and heavily eating meats for protein. We immediately told her to eliminate these foods from her diet. Her response was, “I’ll follow, but no one had ever told me not to eat these foods”.

WHAT IS CROHN’S DISEASE?
Crohn’s disease is a chronic and irremediable disease that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is an autoimmune disease that causes enduring inflammation and irritation to the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s inflammation commonly occurs at the end of the ileum (small intestine) and at the cecum (the beginning of large intestine) where they connect. However, Crohn’s disease conditions vary by person and inflammation can affect an individual in one section or segments throughout the GI tract (from the oral cavity to anus). Inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease can spread deep into the layers of the bowel tissue resulting in thickening of the bowel wall that does not subside. Subsequently, inflammation from Crohn’s disease can develop into colorectal cancer.

The cause of Crohn’s disease is not known. Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system is unable to differentiate between their cells from foreign pathogens. Crohn’s disease is believed to be hereditary. That being the case, a significant chance an individual will have Crohn’s disease is if someone in their family or a close relative has Crohn’s disease. An individual has a higher risk of developing Crohn’s disease when both mother and father have IBD. Crohn’s disease affects both men and women between the ages of 15 and 35. There is no cure for Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease can be treated with specific medication based on the severity and location of the condition. Medication such as steroids and immunosuppressants, aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, and immunomodulators can be prescribed to help control, sustain flair-ups and reduce inflammation. However, each medication has various side effects such as headaches, heartburn, acne, bone loss, high blood pressure, low white blood cell count and other side effects that can potentially lead to higher chance of developing infections and pancreatitis. Additionally, some medication can take several weeks or months before becoming active and require regular screening due to high risk of colorectal cancer. Since Crohn’s condition occasionally goes into remission, it is unknown if a specific prescription drug is effective towards Crohn’s disease. Surgery may be required if all medication drugs have been exhausted and ineffective towards the individual. Depending on the location of the condition, the operation consists of removing that specific part of inflammation from the intestines. However, each part of the internal organs plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis within our body. By removing an essential part of the organ, Crohn’s disease can reappear but in other areas of the intestines that can lead to diarrhea or malnutrition.
