I had been suffering from inflammation and infection throughout my body and was taking a lot of antibiotics along with two stays in the hospital in 2019. I was found to have Colon Cancer and had the surgery to remove a section of my Colon. As a precaution the Oncologist strongly suggested chemotherapy. I agreed and began the series of infusions. However, they did not test for an enzyme in my blood saying it was rare and I suffered from unrelenting nausea for 20 straight days with little relief. I returned to the hospital and spent almost two weeks trying to diagnose the problem. The doctors advised that my immune system was destroyed by the chemotherapy and the inflammation was back. After almost two weeks of three antibiotics and several other medications and flushing my systems I recovered. I had lost a lot of weight, was extremely weak and advised to stay away from people due to my weak immune system. I was staying at home for months except for the doctor visits with a very slow recovery. 

My daughter told a colleague at work of my situation and she recommended Dr. Huang who had done wonders for her family. My daughter T took me to meet Dr. Huang and he seemed to really understand my situation. He said the priority was to help my immune system recover and bring my strength back to all my systems. HOW IS ASTHMA TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE? 

ASTHMA

Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways of the lungs. The bronchial tubes are sensitive, and it can easily be inflamed. When irritants trigger asthma, the bronchial tubes that carry oxygen into the lungs produce extra mucus. The excess mucus inflames and swells the airway causing the bronchial tubes to constrict, making it difficult for the individual to breathe. Asthma can worsen when fighting an infection, cold or flu. It can also interfere with individual daily activities and can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. 

ASTHMA SYMPTOMS

Not everyone with asthma will experience the same symptoms. Some may have symptoms a few days out of the year, while others may have symptoms every day. Asthma symptoms include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chest tightness or pain, coughing, and wheezing. 

Risk Factors are:

Have an immediate family with asthma. 

Have another condition such as allergies, atopic dermatitis, obesity, respiratory infections, and wheezing. 

A smoker or had been exposed to environments such as secondhand smoke, exhaust fumes, or other types of pollution.

African Americans and Puerto Ricans have a higher risk of developing asthma. 

TREATMENT OF ASTHMA

There is no cure for asthma, but their symptoms can be controlled by treatment. Treatment for asthma varies by the person due to their age, symptoms, and asthma severity. Short-term treatment such as quick-relief medicine and allergy medication can provide temporary relief of symptoms. Quick-relief inhalers are inhaled directly into the lungs to open swollen airways during an asthma attack. Long-term medication is taken daily to prevent an asthma attack from occurring. Long-term medication is taken over some time to allow the easing of the airway inflammation and the prevention of mucus overproduction in the lungs. Emergency care treatment is for a severe asthma attack. Their treatment can consist of short-term treatment, long-term medication, and nebulizer, or intravenous. Depending on their severity, they may receive oxygen therapy or breathing assistance. 

ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT ASTHMA 

Acupuncture helps asthma by inducing the homeostatic response on the cellular level. They influence the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in the nervous system to improve the circulation of energy through the meridians. Acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will change the experience of sensory, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. Acupuncture helps by releasing neurochemicals to relax the bronchial tubes from constricting and balance the production of mucus in the bronchial tubes. When an individual encounters irritants that may trigger an asthma attack, the airway will be clear of mucus to prevent an asthma attack from occurring. Acupuncture is safe and painless. There are no drugs or hazardous equipment used, and no surgical operation performed. 

CASE STUDIES:

On November 24, 2018, I went to the dermatologist and was diagnosed with eczema dermatitis. I was shocked. Cancer patients in the United States may soon find new and unconventional relief for their pain - a regimen of piercing the skin with scores of needles, commonly known as acupuncture. Cancer patients are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of combining acupuncture with western cancer treatments. The ancient method of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is currently supported by the National Institute of Health, which asserts that it can be used as part of a “total treatment plan” for cancer.

“TCM has been used to treat cancer and the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy for cancer patients for a long time in China… Patients’ cancer can be controlled and be inhibited from spreading out to the other parts of body,” said Dr. Zhang Xie L.Ac., a former clinical professor of the Guangxi Medical University in mainland China. Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the body’s endorphins and hormones, effectively controlling pain and irritations from the effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Both styles of medicine have their different uses. “For urgent care patients suffering from acute illnesses such as heart attack, severe infection, trauma, and so forth, western medicine is recommended. For chronic conditions and pain syndromes such as sinusitis, migraines, insomnia, chronic fatigue, P.M.S., and so forth, acupuncture and TCM are recommended,” said Dr. Zhang. Acupuncturists seek a holistic approach to healing their patients, focusing not only upon alleviating the pain, but with other aspects of their lifestyle such as nutrition and dietary guidelines as well.

This attitude often conflicts with the western approach to medicine but now, experts are looking to combine to complement each other. Currently, the western approach includes several methods of curing cancer. One of the most well known is chemotherapy, where the body is fed toxic drugs such as Amifostine, Dronabinol, and Megestrol. The cancer cells, which grow faster than normal cells, absorb more of these toxins than normal cells over the same time intervals, leading to their termination. However, common side effects of this treatment include hair loss, nausea, and vomiting. The second most common method is radiation treatment, where the cancer cells are killed by an x-ray bombardment. This typically leaves the skin red and irritated and the patient feeling nauseated. The cancer patient can also opt to have the tumor surgically removed, which relieves the strain and pressure on the nerves that the tumor can cause, but leaves the patient with pain from the operation.

To find relief from these conditions, combination treatments are now being used. Generally they vary from individual to individual depending on medical conditions and other factors. Some patients rely solely on the acupuncturist to alleviate the ailments left from their western therapies. Others seek an approach that requires coordination between the acupuncturist and the physician administering the western medicine. Both experts check the patient’s medical records and collaborate on a schedule, switching off between chemotherapy and radiation treatment, following with acupuncture to treat the ailments caused by these treatmens.

“We work around [the doctors’] schedule,” says Dr. Janet Yeh L.Ac., Natural Medicine in California. Dr. Yeh, also commented that this combination therapy is not uniform in its approach to healing, she said, “Sometimes it’s very effective. But each case is individual and depends upon where the cancer is as well.”

Since acupuncture needles are five times thinner than regular injection needles, they are doubly beneficial because they cause very little pain and alleviate pain from treatment. Some acupuncturists assert, however, that the benefits go beyond the dulling of pain. Many proponents of TCM claim that an invisible life force known as “qi” is also stimulated by acupuncture, and increases an individual’s ability to heal oneself. Whether the needles conjure up “qi” energy to assist in healing the patient’s cancer is highly debatable since its existence and healing power is difficult to ascertain. 

So what is the future for this crossover of therapies in the West? With growing support for this treatment and long-standing approval from TCM acupuncturists, prospects appear hopeful. “I think it’s good combining western and eastern medicine to treat patients, including cancer patients,” says Dr. Zhang. “Both medicines help each other. Patients can get the best results and less side effects.”

Migraine headache is a neurological disorder that causes reoccurring headaches of varying intensity to one side of the head. It consists of throbbing or pulsing sensation pain that can last between four to 72 hours. A migraine headache often coincides with visual disturbance, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and sound.

HOW IS CROHN’S DISEASE TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

Crohn’s disease is a chronic and irremediable disease that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are an autoimmune disease-causing enduring inflammation and irritation to the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s inflammation commonly occurs at the end of the ileum (small intestine) and at the cecum (the beginning of large intestine) where they connect. HOW IS SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS (S.L.E.) TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

WHAT IS SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS?

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease that causes inflammation, pain and swelling in the joints. SLE, is an auto-immune disorder; in which their origin isn’t easily detected. Auto-immune disorders are a result of the body attacking its own body tissues and creating antibodies that began to fight the healthy tissue. All treatments are directed towards managing symptoms. Lupus affects the kidneys, joints lungs, nervous system, others organs of the body and skin. Here are some characteristics symptoms of SLE, fatigue (related to inflammatory response), weight loss, fever, blood clots and hair loss are all non-specific symptoms of SLE and can be experienced with other disorders. However, it is the severity of these symptoms that causes concern to the individual. Individuals may also have stomach pain, poor circulation (fingers and toes) and heartburn. However, diagnosis of SLE is determined through a series of blood test and other characteristic symptoms such as, rashes (butterfly rash on cheeks), rash on skin due to Sun exposure, mouth sores, arthritis (may also need joint replacement), neurologic impairment, lung and heart inflammation, kidney problems (blood in the urine or protein) leading to low kidney function and kidney failure which can lead to death. Lupus flares differ from patient to patient. There are times when the disease is active and then there are times when the patients are in remission. 

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

The symptoms of SLE varies from person to person, flare ups of the disease are distinguished uniquely between individuals. Inherited tendencies, sunlight, viruses and drug allergies are suspected to be the cause of the inflammatory response. Also, individuals with SLE have an impaired ability to clear old cells and damaged cells from the body which causes an immune response. Lupus starts around the 20s – 30s and is common in Asians and African Americans. This auto-immune disease has many symptoms. 

MODERN MEDICINE TREATMENT | DRUG MEDICINE:

Based on the severity of your symptoms, if your Physician suspects SLE; a series of blood test will be drawn to determine if an individual will be diagnosed with SLE. If the individual has SLE the blood test results will be abnormal. The white blood cell count and red blood cell count will be low. There will be a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) present in nearly all individuals with SLE. Although, ANA is present you can have ANA and not have SLE. If an individual has SLE, specific antibodies will be present that show an immune system problem; anti-double-strand DNA (called anti-dsDNA), anti-Smith (anti-Sm) or antiphospholipid antibodies will be present. These antibodies are potential harm to the fetus, causing miscarriage, blood clots and difficulty with memory. Because there is no cure for Lupus, treating it is a challenge.

The severity of your symptoms and the symptoms an individual is experiencing determines the treatment. Individuals with joint pain or muscle pain, fatigue and rashes receive anti-inflammatory therapy also known as NSAIDs. These drugs decrease pain and swelling. Advil, Motrin and Naproxen are the drugs most used in treating symptoms of Lupus. Because SLE is a chronic disorder the individual whom take these drugs can develop liver and kidney damage. Antimalarial drugs may also be prescribed. Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine), this drug treat and prevent malaria. These drugs also relieve the some symptoms related to SLE, which are blood clotting, mouth sores, rashes, fatigue and joint pain. Immune suppressants and corticosteroids are also used to help with inflammation and stop the immune response related to Lupus. Often the side effects of these drugs may increase the risk for infection or cause major side effects. The Physician may lower the dose due to side effects or stop the drug when the individual goes into remission. It’s important to be in compliance with treatment by doing blood work and lab test frequently to adjust treatment as needed.

Treatment for an anxiety disorder is either medication, psychotherapy, or both. Depending on the type of anxiety disorder an individual has, certain anti-anxiety, antidepressants, or sedatives are prescribed. Some medications can have an immediate effect, while others may take several weeks before becoming effective. Over time, an individual can build tolerance and become dependent on the medication. Compassionate is an understatement when I talk about Doctor Kevin!!

When I found dr. Kevin I was absolutely desperate. My daughter at 13 years old was no longer living a life a 13 year old should live. She no longer could show up to school, participate in gymnastics, she didn't want to have friends over because she was so afraid of how she would feel she didn't want to go to friends houses because she was so afraid of how she would feel. I tried so many other things! I have a phenomenal modern medicine doctor who completely thinks outside the box, I have an incredible chiropractor that does up & beyond what I've ever seen with a holistic doctor and I've seen many other amazing people to help support my daughter.

But still her energy level was so low and she would always just say she felt "icky" and she looked sick. She had dark circles under her eyes no energy to jump around the house anymore no flips and tricks  on the trampoline. It seemed every food she would eat would make her cheek swell up we did not know it what to feed her. We already ate extremely healthy about 80 90% organic gluten-free and amazing supplements.

My first appointment with Dr. Kevin and he reassured us that he could help Savana. He said it could take up to two years things might get worse before they get better but he still gave me hope.  I had to try it for my little girl.

In November 2017, a few months after having back surgery, I noticed my left foot showed “drop foot.” My left foot would occasionally fall which made walking difficult without a cane or walker. It caused my social drinking life to slow down because I wasn’t comfortable being around friends with my drop foot. After several testing, I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.

I started with physical therapy in hopes to improve my drop foot. After six months, it helped a little, but it didn’t provide as much improvement since they didn’t seem to know how else to help me with my condition. I also tried massage therapy, and that did not help either, but the massage therapist did recommend that I try acupuncture. So, I searched on the internet for an acupuncture clinic and came across Agape Acupuncture, which lead me to schedule a consultation with Dr. Huang. 

On August 9, 2018, I had a consultation with Dr. Huang. I expressed my struggle with peripheral neuropathy on my left foot and how it has impacted my personal life and social life. Dr. Huang recommended acupuncture treatments and provided me with a dietary guideline to help me improve my health. After a few weeks of treatments, I noticed an improvement in my drop foot.

At first, I didn’t know much about acupuncture or was a firm believer in natural medicine. My family and friends were excited and very encouraging for me to try acupuncture out in hope to improve my drop foot and to have a normal life again. After eight months of acupuncture treatments and following the dietary guidelines that Dr. Huang recommended, I was able to walk again!  Acupuncture helped me get my life and social life back. “The Walking Miracle” - Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Stepping into Agape Acupuncture for the first time, the thing that struck me the most was the beauty of the clinic. Then, the friendly staff greeted me and brought me in for my first treatment. 

That was two years ago and I have been going in for acupuncture treatments ever since. When I first came in to the clinic, I had just finished a battle with Leukemia (AML with a FLT 3 mutation) and had to undergo three rounds of chemo and two bone marrow transplants because the first one had failed. I still remember when the doctor said I’d have only two months to live. As a result of all this strain on my body, I came out cancer free, but with chronic graft vs host disease. I had low platelets which resulted in constant bloody noses that were pretty annoying to deal with on a day to day basis. To deal with this, my doctors required me to get weekly platelet infusions just to keep my platelets around 20 which is still very low. I also had a damaged liver and my overall facial complexion was much darker than normal. After coming to Dr. Huang, for treatment, my platelets, liver, and complexion have all gotten better. I have definitely been able to enjoy life much more because of this. When I first got here, I constantly worried about the next time I’d get a bloody nose out of nowhere because they took a while to stop or if my facial complexion looked fine. Now, I feel much more relaxed about my nose and facial complexion since they have both recovered close to normal, which makes me excited for the future. I haven’t even had to get a platelet infusion in a very long time! I would just like to thank Dr. Huang and the staff here for always being super friendly and helping me out with the acupuncture.

At the age of six, patient GN suffered from migraines. A migraine consists of a headache of varying intensity, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. It can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation for hours to days. A migraine usually occurs on one side of the head and can be treated with pain-relieving and preventive medication.

However, GN didn't have a typical migraine. Her migraine was so severe that it led to migraine attacks. GN migraine attacks occur throughout her head and scalp, producing tension towards the back of her neck. It would last for hours, even up to several days. With such severity condition, her primary doctor prescribed propranolol, a beta blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, shaking (tremors), and other condition such as preventing migraine headaches and chest pain. Propranolol works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in the body to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks, and naproxen. Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that blocks the body's production of a certain natural substance that causes inflammation. It is used to relieve pain from various conditions such as headaches, muscle aches, tendonitis, and menstrual cramps. Nonetheless, after taking her medications, GN would still experience severe migraines.

Suffering from migraines for more than forty-five years, GN couldn't tolerate the pain any longer. GN was desperate to try anything other than modern medicine. On July 28, 2017, GN came into Agape Natural Health of Orange County seeking help to alleviate her migraine. During her consultation with Dr. Huang, GN expressed how much distress her migraine had affected her life. How recently, her headache has lasted for three months straight causing her head and scalp to ache, producing a discomfort at the back of her neck. With the constant pain on her head and neck, she underwent stress that brought on sleepless nights. After trying various medications prescribed by her primary physician, nothing helped with her migraines. As Dr. Huang took in GN concerns and reviewed her migraine history, he recommends a combination of acupuncture treatments and natural herbal medicine. Without any hesitation, GN began her treatment immediately.

Before GN treatments, she had tension on the occipital and left temporal portion of her head, neck pain and was tired and stressed. By committing to acupuncture treatments in conjunction with herbal supplements, it allows the body to heal naturally causing her body to go through a series of ups and downs. With precise acupuncture points for needle insertion, acupuncture encourages the body to promote natural healing and improve functioning by stimulating the meridian system. Meridian system is an energy channel that runs in regular patterns through the body and over its surface, allowing it to unblock any areas that may cause a backup and unbalance of the body from regulating properly. Acupuncture helps the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities. In addition to acupuncture, herbal medicine contains between six to eighteen different herbs, making them a complete system. After her first week of treatments at Agape Natural Health, GN reported she slept better and had more energy, but was still stressed. As GN actively continued her acupuncture treatments and herbal supplements, within three weeks, her headache was slowly subduing. GN indicated that her migraine felt 90 percent better. During her first month, she experienced four headaches that occur on her left temporal region and averaging six hours of sleep. Whereas before her treatments, she had headaches just about every day and was sleeping no more than four hours a night. There were times when GN went several weeks without experiencing any migraines and other times it would appear for less than two days. GN stress level and energy fluctuated each week, but as she progressively continued her acupuncture treatments and taking her herbal supplements, her stress level improved allowing her to gain more energy.

By committing to her acupuncture treatments and herbal supplements, her migraine improved tremendously. At the end of her six months, GN had no complaints because she felt completely better. She was no longer suffering from severe migraines. By dedicating to her treatment program, acupuncture and herbal medicine allow the body to promote healing by restoring its balance and improving her function to live a healthier lifestyle.
