HOW IS MIGRAINE HEADACHES TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

MIGRAINE HEADACHES

Migraine headache is a neurological disorder that causes reoccurring headaches of varying intensity to one side of the head. It consists of throbbing or pulsing sensation pain that can last between four to 72 hours. A migraine headache often coincides with visual disturbance, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and sound. 

MIGRAINE HEADACHES SYMPTOMS

Migraine headaches symptoms can vary person by person and can occur before, during, or after a migraine. Symptoms of migraine can progress between four stages: prodrome, aura, attack, and post-drome phases.

In the prodrome stage, a person can detect a migraine one or two days before it occurred based on slight changes to their body. They will notice modest mood changes, have food cravings, stiff neck, uncontrollable yawning, increase in thirst, and urination.

Some people may experience symptoms in the aura stage for 20 to 60 minutes before or after a migraine transpire. Symptoms include visual phenomena and vision loss. People may hear noises, struggle with speeches, have uncontrollable movements, prickly sensation in arms or legs, and weakness or numbness on one side of the body or face.

Attack stage usually occurs when the migraine is untreated, and they last between four and 72 hours. Migraine can attack a few times or happen several times a month. People may feel pulsing or throbbing pain on one or both side of their head, nausea and vomiting, and are sensitive to light, sound, smell, and touch.

After experiencing a migraine, people may feel drained and thoroughly washed out. However, any sudden movement in the post-drome phase may trigger migraine pain to arise again for a short-term. 

Risk Factors are:

Higher chance if a family member has migraines

Migraine headache peak in the thirties

Women are more likely to have migraines than men

Occur before or after the onset of menstruation 

MODERN MEDICINE TREATMENT OF MIGRAINE HEADACHES | DRUG MEDICINE

Depending on the type of migraine headache, it can be treated either with a pain-relieving medication or a preventive medication. Pain-relieving medicines are taken during migraine attacks to prevent symptoms. Preventive medicines are taken regularly to reduce the severity of migraines. However, with overuse of medications, it can lead to worsening of migraines, vomiting and nausea, weight gain, sleepiness, dizziness, and possible ulcers and bleeding in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

For at least 45 years I have had Migraines and headaches but I was not diagnosed until my early thirties. I was glad it wasn’t something worst. My Neurologist said it’s possible to have a Migraine gene. I have been on Migraine medicine for years and I go to work with them. Sometimes I would have to call out ill and go straight to bed. I could not really function – they limited me from my daily activities. I was frustrated and discouraged after all the years and treatments from other doctors and I still had migraines. I had Chiropractor for a month and it did not really help me. I also got massages. It did not take the Migraines away, but it would relax me. My Neurologist just gave me more medications. I was taking Imitrix 50 mg - the side effects were shortness of breath and chest tightness. I have been treated with medications ongoing for 45 years. I still take Imitrix on occasion as needed, but the side effects of dizziness and nausea cautioned me to take it only when necessary.

I came to Natural Medicine Center on November 26, 2011. My husband encouraged me but I was apprehensive. I hoped to lessen my Migraines and feel better because I was always tired. I have had severe migraines for over 19 years, which started when I was 10 years old. My migraines came frequently and I have suffered so much pain for all those years. Every time I would have my migraine attack my left eye would hurt so bad, unbearably, and I would keep on vomiting for days which would sometimes make me dehydrated. They have been so debilitating, causing me to have to lock myself in a dark and quiet room, and yet still having so much pain and constantly vomiting. I am a naturally active and hard working person and so this illness also causes me to suffer from depression as it restricts most aspects of my activities.

A few months ago a friend of mine suggested that I try acupuncture as it is able to treat many illnesses. Although we were somewhat skeptical my husband and I began a search to find an acupuncturist that we were comfortable with when we came across Dr. Huang’s Natural Medicine website in July of 2012, and were impressed, and made an appointment right away.

When I first started seeing Dr. Huang he advised me to change some of my habits, such as diet, which I have done, also put me on herbal medications and of course began my acupuncture. Thank God we were lead to seek natural healing. Not only have my migraines been nearly eliminated, my overall general health, as well as my sleeping habits and general mood have all improved dramatically. It is such a blessing to finally lead a normal life and now we will continue on with making wise decisions regarding my health and look forward to improving even further.

I was diagnosed with eczema and migraine headaches at 13 years old. I suffered with this condition for 9 years and felt nervous that it would effect my skin my whole life. The headaches limited me where I could not go to work. The migraine headaches caused extreme nausea, and I was very light and sound sensitive. It caused me to be sick and it was hard to talk with people or focus on anything. The eczema made my skin extremely itchy. I could not wear clothes that I wanted. I had sleeplessness at night from the irritation and it bothered me daily at work.

I went to several Dermatologists for the eczema and the treatments of topical and steroid based ointments typically lasted 3 months. The eczema would go away for only short amounts of time and then come back. The creams always irritated my skin, caused extreme burning and dried out surrounding areas not affected by eczema.

We go to church with Dr. Huang and I began coming to Agape Acupuncture, Inc. in September 2012. I hoped to start a healthier life and that my eczema and headaches would be no longer. My family was very supportive! My friends were slightly weary but quickly saw the results and are no longer skeptics. I did not understand natural medicine and everything it treated. I started acupuncture treatments, herbal medicine, nutrition, food and dietary guidelines. The staff was so friendly, knowledgeable, very warm and welcoming, and always busy – this was a good sign to me!

I started feeling better about 3 weeks into treatments. My home life is healthier – healthier eating and living in general. I have more energy at work and feel I have been a good influence to my friends on living a healthier life. I feel healthy and have an improved quality of life! At 14 years of age, I started getting migraine headaches. At that time, I really did not understand - I just knew I had pain. I had family members who also suffered from this: my mother, her sister, my maternal grandmother, and on my father’s side two of his sisters. I experienced a little halo before my eyes, as it progressed a little flash of light and then I would lose my peripheral vision. The headaches affected everything, and it got to the point I was bed ridden. When my migraines come on, I would have to seclude myself in a dark room (no light) and certain odors made it worse. I saw a Neurologist who prescribed shots and prescription drugs such as Imitrex, a muscle relaxer, medication for nausea and a few others ones. I also had biofeedback therapy. From 1988 to 2011 the treatments just treated the symptoms and not the problem. I suffered from a lifetime of headaches and saw 15 medical doctors with no success.

I was looking for something other than what I was having to take - something that worked with no aftermath. On June 11, 2012 I started acupuncture, herbs and dietary guidelines with Dr. Kevin Huang at Agape Acupuncture, Inc. The office is different but educational. It is not your customary doctor office. I really did not understand natural medicine and I was uneducated about it so I really did not have any expectations. The treatments are customized for each patient and caters to the person, body and lifestyle. My friends and family were skeptical at first and now they are supportive. I have had at least 3 relatives come here for other ailments.

After a couple weeks I had more energy and I just felt better in general. In six months I have only had three headaches which were induced by coast to coast air travel. Less time being ill = less time off from work and more time with my family, and I'm in a better mood. I have increased energy and an improved quality of life. At age nine I experienced my first migraine. I have been suffering from migraines for the last seven years. The past year was especially painful. I began to experience at least one migraine each week. The pain from the migraines intensified after receiving a concussion from football.

November 2012 I was diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis and I’ve had migraines for 15 years. My initial reaction to the diagnosis was despair because I’m a Zumba Instructor. I was diagnosed with eczema and migraine headaches at 13 years old. I suffered with this condition for 9 years and felt nervous that it would effect my skin my whole life. The headaches limited me where I could not go to work. The migraine headaches caused extreme nausea, and I was very light and sound sensitive. It caused me to be sick and it was hard to talk with people or focus on anything. The eczema made my skin extremely itchy. I could not wear clothes that I wanted. I had sleeplessness at night from the irritation and it bothered me daily at work.

I went to several Dermatologists for the eczema and the treatments of topical and steroid based ointments typically lasted 3 months. The eczema would go away for only short amounts of time and then come back. The creams always irritated my skin, caused extreme burning and dried out surrounding areas not affected by eczema.

For 6 years, I had migraine headaches excessively. I had to lessen my activities and change my entire routine. I had nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, hair loss, and cold sensations on the back of the neck. I had sensitivity to light and sound, and my condition made me really sensitive all around. I would have to go home from work a lot and I couldn’t do my daily routines. I couldn’t go to family events, or do any kind of physical activity such as dance or exercise. I couldn’t go out with friends, and I had to take lots of medications. My condition also caused mood swings and irritability.

From 2000-2004, I went to doctors and to the emergency room and was prescribed many drug medications. I took prescription and over the counter drugs. I took Imitrex everyday, Ibuprophen (800mg), and several others. I went to the neurologist and had several CAT scans and MRIs. There were no results from modern medicine, and the prescribed medications actually put me back into the hospital. They were only temporary solutions to a permanent problem. In 2004, I gave up and I just stayed home and took aspirins. I thought that my illness was something that I would have to live with.

In September 2006, I came to the Natural Medicine Center because what I had tried before didn’t help, and I saw positive results watching my family come in. I didn’t know about natural medicine but I was at ease. I began treatments with acupuncture and taking herbal medicine.

4 weeks into the treatments, I started feeling better - from having 2-3 migraines a day to having none at all. I no longer have to carry the Advil and the migraines are gone from everyday life. My wife, however, was very supportive. I thought it worked for some people and it didn't work for some people. I was in so much pain that one day I stopped at church and asked God to heal me. I promised I would go to church everyday and I continue to do so. The clinic is very nice and clean. It's amazing how the staff always knows everyone's name. I began with acupuncture, diet and herbs.

I feel great about the results!!! After about 3 weeks of treatment I started feeling better. They helped me and I have no more headaches. It gave me my life back!!! I have increased energy and could walk every day. Very good job! I was hoping for these results and amazed that it worked. The medical staff is professional and cares about how you feel. Great staff. I don't know how the doctor finds you guys but he did a very good job. He has good people working for him and I have already referred people here. You have to give natural medicine a chance. I tell others of my story - that it worked for me. I recently had a problem with my back and came here first before my regular doctor.
